At Fielding we have formed a link with the Featherstone School Sport Partnership and as such will be competing at various events throughout the year. Pupils will be selected to represent Fielding based not only on merit, but on attitude and passion for the sport. At Fielding we are striving to be as competitive as possible when attending inter-school tournaments while still aiming to ensure that every pupil has the same opportunity to try out for teams.
In addition to Fielding competing at local school tournaments, we are again organising and taking part in our very own Peal Shield tournament for football. This year there are 15 local schools entered and it will again prove to be a very tough tournament with everybody trying their hardest to lift the shield.
The Selection Process
Selection for sports teams is primarily through a trial at the start of the year or term. After the trial, a set number of children are chosen to attend weekly squad training sessions for that sport. To maintain a place in a squad children must have excellent attendance, as well as a strong work ethic and positive attitude. In order to ensure that all children, regardless of background have equal opportunity to compete, at least 7% of pupils in a squad will, wherever possible, be entitled to Pupil Premium grant.
Throughout the year children may be invited to join squad training, provisionally on a trial basis if they have a demonstrated within PE or similar, a good ability in a particular sport. If they do well during this trial period they will be asked to continue.
Regardless of how children are chosen for squads, they are not guaranteed a permanent place on the squad for the remainder of the year. If children do not attend regularly, don’t show the required work ethic at training or have negative classroom behaviour they may be uninvited.
