  • Orchestra Auditions

Fri 30 Sep 2016 Michael Mappin

Auditions for the Fielding Orchestra will take place on Friday 14th October during the afternoon.  To be considered for a place in Orchestra you will need to satisfy the following criteria:

    1. You must play an orchestral instrument.  Guitarists, pianists and recorder players are not eligible to join.  If in doubt, please ask or email Mr Mappin.
    2. You should be at least Grade 1 standard.  If you are not sure, ask your instrumental teacher.
    3. You will have to pass an audition (details below).
    4. You will have to commit to attending as many rehearsals as you can and all concerts.  Rehearsals are on Wednesday mornings at 8am in the Sports Hall (starting after the October half-term holiday).  Details of the Christmas and Summer concerts are on the Laser calendar.

    THE AUDITION:

There are 3 parts to the audition:

    1. You should bring along a piece to play.  If you want piano accompaniment, please bring this along with you.  The piece should show off your playing skills to their best.
    2. You will have to sight read a short piece of music.  The standard is about Grade 1.
    3. You will have a short interview.  You might be asked questions like:  Why do you want to join Orchestra?  What is special to you about the instrument you play?

Not everyone passes the audition, but if you do your best and practise your piece in advance, you will have a better chance than if you just turn up and hope for the best.  If possible, we will let you know by the end of Friday if you have been successful.

How to apply for an audition:

Email Mr Mappin (click on this link) to say you are interested.  You must say which instrument you play, what Grade you are at (don't worry too much about this...it's the quality of your playing rather than having actually passed an exam) and what piece you plan to play at your audition.

    PLEASE NOTE:

    • If you are already a member of Fielding Orchestra, you do not need to re-audition.
    • You do not need to have music lessons at Fielding to audition for the Fielding Orchestra.

  • Volunteering in school, we need you!

    Fri 30 Sep 2016

Do you have time to listen to children read in school?

On Tuesday 11th October we will be hosting two sessions for you to come in an sign-up to volunteer in school.

We are looking for parent volunteers to:

    • listen to children read in all year groups
    • help out on trips/sporting events  in all year groups
    • provide handwriting support in key-stage 1
    • support our youngest children in Reception with reading, and fine motor skills,
    • help us tidy and organise our key-stage 1 and key-stage 2 libraries.

If you are interested in finding out more, and can volunteer on a regular basis, please drop-in to one of our sessions on 11th October at 9:15am or 2:45pm.

All new volunteers will be asked to complete our volunteer application form and agreement.

Parents are unable to volunteer in school or on school trips on a regular basis (more than once in every four weeks) without a valid DBS check, therefore will require you to apply for one before you start your volunteering role. DBS checks can be arranged through school, details will be provided at our sessions on the 11th October.

If you have already completed our volunteer agreement, and have a valid DBS you do not need to completed these documents again.

We understand that some parents will want to volunteer to accompany your child's class or year group on a school trip or sporting event as a one off event, this can be done without a valid DBS, however you will need to be supervised by a school member of staff and you will need to complete our  off-site volunteer agreement.

  • Year 4 - The Romans Are Coming!

Thu 29 Sep 2016 Mr. McConnachie

We have had a great start to year 4. Having settled in to their new routines and now remembering to bring in their Reading Records every day, the children are now immersing themselves in all things Roman! Preparation and planning for our Roman historical narratives is underway and we are all thoroughly enjoying reading our English stimulus, ‘Roman Invasion – My Story’.

Reflection on what makes a good learner has re-focussed everyone on their goals and next steps for this year. In connection with British Values, tolerance is taking us into October and Year 4 have once again taken the responsibility and the challenge of completing the Values Baccalaureate. This is the ultimate opportunity to show that they apply and live by all our school values both in and out of school. This will be fully explained to the children in school.

Finally, the date for the Year 4 Roman Day is Wednesday, 12th of October. Children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite Roman character!

  • Forgotten items being delivered to the school office

Thu 29 Sep 2016 School Office

There has been an increase in the number of items being delivered to the school office during the school day which needs to be passed to children.  We would like to ask you to encourage your child to be more independent and responsible for their own belongings and to ensure they have all that is required for their school day ahead.  Thank you for supporting us in minimising the disruption to your child's learning.

  • Has your child lost an item of property?

    Thu 29 Sep 2016

Please ensure that you label your children's items with their name and class. Check with the class teacher regarding the lost item. Please ensure your children take ownership of their property, reminding them to collect their items at the end of the day, break-times or after any clubs they may be attending. There is no lost property at the front office, named items will go back to your children's class, this may take a couple of days as it means taking staff members from their other duties. Lost property which is not named will be available outside the main hall under the canopy every Friday morning and afternoon. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

  • An egg-citing update!

    Wed 28 Sep 2016 K.Webb

Every summer in Reception we have a special delivery of eggs to school that the children look after and witness the chicks hatching.

This previous summer we had a special story when one of the eggs didn't hatch straight away.  After a number of days of doubt an extremely determined, final chick hatched joining his siblings. He was very weak and was born with a bad foot but after a lot of care and love from Miss May, Mrs Lord and the Reception children the chick became stronger and stronger.  The children named him Hercules after his strength of character and determination to be just like his brothers and sisters.

After a number of weeks the chicks, including Hercules were taken to a farm in Essex where they have plenty of space to live the rest of their lives. We have been receiving updates on the chickens as the months have gone on and thought you would all like to see the progress that our chickens and especially Hercules has made.

Four months on he is healthy and happy and his foot is completely healed. We hope this update and photos make you smile as much as it has us!

Year 1 (Reception last year) I am sure that Hercules wants to say a huge thank you!

  • Learning in Year 1

    Wed 28 Sep 2016 Miss E Tsoukala

During the last two weeks Year One children have been having lots of fun and building on their learning in all subjects. In Maths we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have used 100 squares to help us fill in the missing numbers in the sequences and we have practised our 2 times tables. We also compared objects according to length and used the scales to order up to 5 objects according to weight. In English we have reflected on our work which was retelling the story of Max. We edited and improved our first draft and we are now ready to write our final draft. The most exciting day for all of us however was our Superhero Day! Children and staff dressed up as superheroes and spent their day enjoying Maths, English and Art activities linked to our superhero topic. It was brilliant to see so many happy little faces and hear Eleanor in 1P comment, “This is the best day ever!”

  • Reminder! Macmillan Coffee Morning Friday 30th Sept!

    Mon 26 Sep 2016 Miss N Jones

    Tuck shop for Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 on Friday 30th September, £1 needed

Year 6 pupils are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. We are opening a Tuck Shop for children in years 3, 4, 5 & 6 on Friday 30th September 2016 throughout the morning.

Children will be able to buy donated cakes/biscuits at their morning break time. Please support this worthwhile cause by giving your child £1 spending money to spend at the stall or alternatively you may wish to send in donations to school.

If you would like to donate cakes / biscuits for the event, we would warmly welcome them. Donations can be brought to the school reception desk.

Raising at least £300 can keep a Macmillan information and support centre stocked for a month with all the resources it needs to support people affected by cancer and £25 can pay for a Macmillan support nurse to work with a family affected by cancer for 1 hour.

Last year we raised over £700 and it would be fantastic if we could raise a similar amount this year.

    Looking forward to seeing everyone!

  • Year 5's new adventure

Mon 26 Sep 2016 Miss Davinson

Year 5 children have settled amazingly well into their new classrooms and loved that they were given their very own lockers. Pupils have been able to start their new adventure as the second oldest year group and with that, we introduced them to their new learning challenge driver “Why is the Amazon rainforest so important to Brazil?”. Pupils have been having their own adventure in the classroom with planning an itinerary for a journey to Brazil for a family of four, this gave the children the freedom to explore what they wanted and get a realistic look on how much an average journey would cost. The topic we have introduced links into our new book for English “Journey to the river sea”, children have been reading the story and writing their own version from the point of view from the main character Maia- children have been excited to get into the shoes of the character and use the new skills they are learning in class.

Approaching the third week, we are continuing with the rainforest which will link into our trip to Kew Gardens on the 4th and the 6th of October, where we will be taking part in a workshop all to do with rainforests. Just a reminder that if you have not paid, can you please do this on Laser and if you would like to come and help on the trip, please talk to your child’s class teacher.
