  • How safe is your child on-line?

    Fri 27 Jan 2017 L. Stabler

Lots of children using or having access to social networking sites

Following our very successful NSPCC assemblies last week, Key Stage 2 have been having class discussions and lessons regarding E Safety. What became clear very quickly is that children are having access to a wide range of social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, Musical.ly, snap chat and WhatsApp. They also showed very little understanding of privacy settings (particularly on Musical.ly) and that anything they post could be visible to outsiders. We regularly discuss E-Safety in school including the dangers connected to talking to people on line and steps to keep themselves safe as part of our curriculum but it is clear that this is an increasing issue. Children as young as eight are admitting to creating their own or using older family member’s social media accounts and admit to not always telling their parents. We would strongly recommend that E safety needs to continue to be spoken about regularly at home.

Below is an interesting article regarding children using social media and two website links with further advice on how you can support with this at home.

  • The Countdown Begins!

    Breaking news!

Tim Peake’s spacecraft lands at the science museum just in time for the holiday club’s visit. Would your child like to see the capsule that has travelled hundreds of miles through outer space? The two metre-tall Russian capsule carried Major Peake on his 186-day mission – in which he became the first British astronaut to walk in space.

This is a huge treat for space fans or those curious to learn more. Could this trip inspire a Fielding child to be one of the next generation of astronauts?

    Bookings now open on Laser.

  • Healthy Fielding, snacks and lunchboxes

    Thu 26 Jan 2017

Working with parents to continue the good work

In the summer term we were very proud to have received the Gold Healthy School Quality Mark in recognition of :

    • improving pupils' emotional health, well-being and behaviour though Values-based education and MindUp
    • increasing physical activity through greater uptake of specialist sports clubs and our PE curriculum
    • promotion of healthy living through our PSHE curriculum.

We have noticed that some children have started bringing in unhealthy snacks for morning break. Can we ask you to check the following:

    • break-time snacks should be fruit only (this is provided for children in Early Years and key-stage 1)
    • lunchboxes should be balanced, click here for ideas: Change4Life

We know that some families like to celebrate  birthdays by sharing treats with the class. If you would like to do this, treats should be brought in after-school  and can be given out in the playground, please do not ask our teachers to do this. An alternative healthy option to this could be donating a book to the class library on your child's birthday.

  • More exciting reading opportunities!

We always welcome donations of books. Please view our wish lists below.

  • Year 1 news

    Wed 25 Jan 2017 E. Tsoukala

Lots of exciting things have being happening  in Y1 since the beginning of 2017!

Readathon started on 9th of January and is taking place for one whole month. Children from the whole school have chosen what they are going to read and have asked family and friends to sponsor them. Family members are able donate the money on the readathon website (www.readathon.org). Children in Year 1 have shown particular enthusiasm.

‘I’m trying to read all the Roald Dahl books’, said James from 1P. Matilda is also excited and said that she is hoping to read all of the books that she has chosen. All the children are excited about the new books which have arrived for the book corners in the school and cannot wait for the book fair to open next week!

  • Year 4 - The Winter March!

Wed 25 Jan 2017 Mr. McConnachie

What have Year 4 been doing?

Year Four have been doing their best to brighten up their days by getting to grips with co-ordinates, plotting shapes, X and Y axes, translations, rotations, lines of symmetry, and right angle turns. Remaining hopeful and enthusiastic about this unit was easy for most as three weeks of fractions were beginning to take their toll, however all made huge progress!

From castles in the sky to miniature fairy castles in the sand, some truly magical and wondrous castles were created in English with the help of Colin Thompson’s clever, spooky and captivating book ‘Castles’. The children used their grammar skills of extended noun phrases, paragraphs to organise their ideas as well as presenting their writing with headings and sub-headings to create some fantastic and fabulous reports on their fictional Castles.

With Norman Day fast approaching, February 10th, the children have been exploring all about 1066, the Battle of Hastings, Motte and Bailey Castles and the Doomsday book. With the sound of marching and singing rumbling through the upper school corridors, 4S and 4H have been showing off their stuff and practising for their class sharing assemblies. Be sure to check the school website for updates to the big day, but rumours are still abound that the King Dunmall might make an appearance, or at least his minstrel??

  • Tolerence Lessons in Year 2

    Wed 25 Jan 2017

    Year 2 English

In keeping with our Curriculum topic "How have Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela helped to make the world a better place?" We have started a new English text which has really captured the interest of all pupils. This week we have been learning about recounts with a focus on the book "I am Rosa Parks". From this text, the pupils have learnt all about who she was and what her life was like, sparking some great discussion within the classroom. We have thought about what we have learnt about Rosa's life and how she shows the values we learn about at Fielding. Milo in 2H said “It’s been really interesting learning all about Rosa Park’s life and how she changed the lives' of black people.”
In addition to learning about the values Rosa showed, pupils are learning the apostrophe being used in writing for contractions, and using this skill in their recounts.
