Fielding
Primary School and Nursery
Keep up to date with all the news happening in the school at the moment. Articles are added during the week. Parents are encouraged to check regularly. Our weekly bulletin, emailed directly to parents, summarises content for the week.
As we welcome the children back to the second half of this Autumn term, we'd like to invite parents and carers to the drop-in, this Thursday 2nd November, from 2:30-3:30pm, with Mrs Chadwick and Mrs Reehal.
This will be an opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns relating to your child's learning or emotional wellbeing.
We have enjoyed such a fun filled week in nursery holiday club.
The children have had a great time on Fielding's pirate ship, pretending to be pirates, walking the plank and sailing the seas, precious stones and gold treasures were found where ‘X’ marked the spot.
The children dug deep into the sand, filling buckets to make sand castles, they even buried some of their friends! This created lots of laughter.
We had very messy fun indoors too, cornflour, cooked pasta, painting firework pictures and making foot & hand prints, the children have enjoyed a busy, fun week at nursery holiday club.
Did you know that there are hours of engaging and motivating French resources available on our school website just waiting to be explored by little language learners? On our French page, you will find French cartoons and games, as well as specific resources linked to the current topics being covered in each year group. Children can use these carefully selected resources to consolidate what they are learning in class and also teach themselves new language. Click here to see the range of free resources available for your children.
Jean Lewis, Years 1 & 2 Teaching Assistant has decided to retire at the end of this school year.
Jean has worked at Fielding for 30 years, starting work as a lunchtime supervisor at Fielding Middle School. Jean has changed roles several times during her career with us. Many former pupils will remember Jean from her role as Welfare Assistant, when they spent time being looked after by her in the Medical Room. As the school expanded in size, Jean moved to become a teaching assistant, finally leaving her lunchtime supervisor role in September 2016.
Highlights of Jean’s career include welcoming boy-band ‘Take That’ to film on the school field with Fielding’s Touch Rugby team in January 1992 and hosting Prime Minister, Tony Blair’s visit in March 1999. Other memorable events for Jean include school trips, ‘Pirate Day’ and surviving several Ofsted inspections!
We wish Jean every happiness in her retirement. Jean’s vacant post will not be replaced.
Planned expansion of our Nursery pupil numbers, combined with the need to reduce staffing costs across the school, have resulted in new opportunities for 2 members of staff:
We first highlighted our concerns about school funding to you in March 2017 (School Funding, news article). Our concerns persist. Insufficient funding for our school and constraints on our ability to absorb rising costs are now starting to impact on teaching, despite doing our utmost to prevent this.
School budgets across the country have been under pressure for some time. School leaders and the Governing Body at Fielding have been grappling with the funding challenges, leading to a number of tough decisions being made. In the last few years we have cut our staffing costs while preserving the quality of teaching by deleting one of two Deputy Head teacher posts, reducing the size of the Admin Team and changing Nursery provision. Today, we have announced that 3 teaching assistant posts in Reception and Years 1 & 2 will be deleted, taking effect from January 2018.
Our school is not alone. The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has shown that seven out of ten school leaders think that their budgets will be unsustainable by the 2019 academic year. In July, the Department for Education re-allocated £1.3 billion for schools from existing budgets, but this is over two years and is not sufficient. Nationally, it is estimated that there is a £2bn gap in funding each year until 2022. It’s clear that the Treasury must now provide additional resources to resolve the funding crisis.
We will work hard to ensure that cuts have the least impact on teaching possible. However, rising costs and the estimated impact of the new National Funding Formula for school will mean that tough decisions will continue to have to be taken. Remaining as a local authority maintained school further limits our ability to absorb the cuts through growth, savings across more than one site and redeployment of staff. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that further cuts will not impact on teaching or the quality of our provision.
Please be assured that we will take the utmost care with budgets, to ensure all the money we have is spent effectively on your children.
We promise to let you know you in plenty of time if our budget means we’ll have to take further significant decision on staffing or activities.
If you are concerned about the impact of funding on our school, you may wish to support the school by lobbying local MPs, Virendra Sharma or Rupa Huq.
The results are finally in and Fielding are this years Boys Cross Country Champions and Overall Cross Country Champions. What a fantastic achievement for all of our runners, well done!!
Check out the PE page for everybody's times and placings and some great action shots.
Contractors start ground works during the half-term holiday break. Safety hoarding will be erected and works begin. Pedestrian access from Coombe Road will be maintained during the works.
Nursery is being extended thanks to a grant from Ealing Council and the Department for Education to enable more local working families to benefit from the government's new 30 hours of free childcare offer. Up to 30 places have already been offered and accepted by parents. Children will join our Nursery in January.
