  • Water pressure update

    Wed 31 Oct 2018 Peter Dunmall

    Very limited meal service and packed lunches to continue

    Thames Water and our own plumbing engineers have worked all day to resolve the on-going issue of low water pressure to the school site.  A range of theories about the cause of the issue are currently being investigated, including legacy pipe work, planned changes to the school's heating and plumbing system and water main supply replacement works.  All are working hard to find the cause and the solution.

    Thames Water will install a temporary larger water supply pipe to the school tomorrow.  If this resolves the issue, permanent replacement works will take place as soon as possible, likely to be next week.

    Meanwhile, we continue to stay open to pupils and staff with a very limited meal service.  The same meal arrangements as today continue to at least next week.  Your support and patience is appreciated.

  • School site opens on Wednesday 31st October

    Tue 30 Oct 2018 Peter Dunmall

    Very limited meal service

    The school site will re-open to pupils and staff tomorrow, Wednesday 31st October, onwards with a very limited school meal service.  All aspects of the school re-open including Nursery, Breakfast Club, main school, After School Club, specialist clubs and morning orchestra.  Meal arrangements are:

    • Nursery pupils will receive a hot meal in the morning and afternoon, as usual, provided by Harrison, the school’s caterer;
    • Reception, Year 1 – 6 pupils who are entitled to a free school meal (based on income) will be offered a sandwich meal provided by Harrison, the school’s caterer. Where pupils are entitled to a free school meal, parents may, if they wish provide their own packed lunch;
    • All other pupils, including Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils who receive a universal infant free meal, will need to bring a packed lunch to school;
    • Breakfast Club and After School Club will receive their meal as usual.

    Packed lunches should be healthy with no fizzy or high sugar drinks; no nuts or products containing nuts to keep other pupils with life-threatening allergies safe.

    The school continues to experience insufficient water pressure to enable us to operate fully. The kitchen uses a high volume of water. Whilst a permanent solution is found, the school can operate hygienically with a good supply of water to taps and toilets when the kitchen is closed. Water pressure is too low in the building to serve all toilets, taps and the kitchen simultaneously. I have prioritised opening the school to pupils and staff with a reduced meal service rather than remaining closed.

    This reduced meal service will remain in place until further notice.

    Thames Water engineers visited the school site this morning. Their tests showed that the school had sufficient water pressure from the mains supply. They advised that the school had a water leak inside the site. Our plumbing engineers have undertaken extensive tests during the day. There is no evidence of a leak within the school site. The current working theory is that water supply pipe replacement works, undertaken by Thames Water over the half-term period without our knowledge, has resulted in a smaller supply pipe from the mains which is not providing the school with a sufficient volume of water leading to unusable water pressure across the school. Our plumbing engineers have considered a range of options to increase water pressure across the school site. However, it is believed that all of the options will fail because the volume of water from the mains supply is simply too small. I am currently waiting on a response from Thames Water.

  • Autumn 2 Gardening and Cooking

    Mon 29 Oct 2018 Jamie Lewis

    Despite the weather turning more wintery, our gardening and cooking lessons continue. Children will keep working with Ellie to tend to the allotment and where possible, children will harvest the fruit and vegetable to use in the kitchen.

    On their allotted garden and cooking day, children are welcome to wear their own clothes suitable for gardening. They should also ensure that they have a warm, water-proof coat, especially as the temperature drops.

    We would also welcome parent volunteers to help out with gardening and cooking. Please speak to your child's class teacher for further information.

    Please also see the dates below, noting that Year 4 have a slight change on order.

  • School site closed, Tuesday 30th October

    Mon 29 Oct 2018 Peter Dunmall

    The school site is closed to pupils and staff tomorrow, Tuesday 30th October, because there is insufficient water pressure to enable the school to operate hygienically. All aspects of the school are closed including Nursery, Breakfast Club, main school, After School Club and specialist clubs.

    I have taken this decision in consultation with Rebecca Preston, Chair of Governors and Ealing’s schools Health & Safety officer. Having waited on a response from Thames Water, on the balance of probability, it is highly unlikely that water pressure will be restored to the school site for us to successfully open tomorrow morning. I am keen to give parents as much notice as possible to make alternative arrangements for children tomorrow.

    We will make arrangements to refund Nursery, Breakfast and After School Club fees for booked sessions. Ealing Music Service tuition lessons and specialist clubs will either be rearranged or refunded.

    I will contact you again tomorrow, as early as possible, about any decision to close on Wednesday 31st October.

  • Risk of closure, Tuesday 30th October

    Mon 29 Oct 2018 Peter Dunmall

    Please make contingency arrangements

    There is a risk that the school will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday 30th October, because it is unhygienic to open as a result of exceptionally low water pressure to the school site.

    The water pressure is so low into the building that

    • the kitchen barely has enough water to operate;
    • there is no water to the first floor of the building;
    • toilet cisterns are not filling fast enough on ground floor so toilets are becoming blocked.

    Thames Water have been informed and will attend the site by 10pm.  We will take the decision to close tomorrow morning by 8am, earlier if possible.  We will post closure decision on Latest News and via Twitter.

    Parents are encouraged to make contingency arrangements for childcare tomorrow in the event of closure.

  • Childcare and Specialist Clubs Update

    Mon 29 Oct 2018

    We are pleased to announce, this Halloween the after school club have a 'spooktacular' mix of Halloween fun for the children to enjoy. The evening starts with a sinister snack of fearsome finger rolls, freakish fruits and creepy cupcakes all washed down with a chilling potion. Then, the excitement builds as the children take part in an eerie trail through the creepy Fielding Forest, hunting for letters that lead to a treat. If children would like to dress up in costume for the evening they will have time to change at 3.30pm.

    So parents if you are working late or are not able to participate, fear not your children will have an amazing time with their friends in after school club. Adhoc bookings always available.

  • Online gaming (including Fortnite), keeping your child safe.

    Thu 18 Oct 2018

    Do you know what your child is doing online?

    As the half-term break is fast approaching children might be spending a little more time on-line.

    Things you can do to keep your child safe online:

    • check your parental controls on your PC to stop then accessing inappropriate material;
    • accessing games on a console or tablet? Here's how to set parental controls: Ask About Games
    • have a conversation, discuss sites and apps together, talk about any concerns they may have;
    • talk about personal information and what not to share online;
    • is your child accessing social networks? Most of these have an age limit of 13+, check the content and age limits of what they are accessing here: NetAware
    • Is your child playing computer games, check the age limit here: Netaware

    Some concerning reports have been in the media recently about the popular game Fortnite, here is some useful advice about the game:

    • Don't ban Fortnite (or any other game) because a newspaper headline said it's evil; at the same time, don't allow it because a friend said it's fine. Have a look and decide yourself (get your child to show you, or play together if you're feeling brave). If you're happy, fine; if not, it doesn't matter whether "everyone else is playing it".
    • Fortnite's PEGI age rating is 12 ( = appropriate age, NOT skill level).
    • Games don't go on for hours, but average 20-30 minutes. So if your child says they need hours and hours, they're wrong...
    • One of the best ways to keep children safe on games is to know what they are doing, so if you allow it, get them to play near you with the sound on (no headphones so you can hear the other players' comments)
    • When you start, there's a 'Privacy' button - choose between Public (anyone in the world) / Friends / Private (invite only). It's easy to change. Make sure you have made the decision.
    • The game is free, but there are lots of in-app purchases. Is your credit card attached to the account/device? Worth checking if your child could buy the £79 10,00 V-Bucks + 3,500 Bonus pack at a click. Click on a cheap one to see if there is a payment method attached.

    This video is a useful 1 minute guide to the game for parents
