  • Years 3 - 6...It's time for the next TTRS Battle of the Bands!

Fri 17 Dec 2021 Reena Patel

Fielding pupils, it is that time again where you will be battling for the crown (and the inflatable guitar) as classes participate in the next Battle of the Bands over Christmas break.

Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) has proven to be the most recent phenomenon of learning times tables at Fielding as it is fun and challenging for all of our pupils. Our last battle over the October half term had all pupils showing consistent engagement and fluent practice which was fantastic.  Through its carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice in-school and at home, it ensures no child is left behind in practice and for those that are confident, over-practice is ensured to increase higher levels of automaticity.

To continue to encourage this high level of practice, we are launching our first 'Battle of the Bands' over the half-term break where all classes in Years 3 -6 will participate in order to win!

Since the start of term, pupils in Years 3 -6  have been playing Times Tables Rock Stars  more frequently than ever before at home! Pupils are excited, enthusiastic, motivated and highly competitive to battle one another, play different modes and earn 'coins' to tweak their personalised rock star avatars. This in addition to the regular in-class practice has already shown a progression in pupils' recall and fluency of multiplication/division facts.

    Why is this important?

It is essential that pupils are fluent, confident and learn instant recall of times tables as without this, many future maths topics will elude pupils. Times tables are fundamental to many maths topics as mental maths facts and operations need to be able to be carried out quickly and with a degree of automaticity in order to free up pupils' working memory for newer, more challenging tasks at hand.

What is a Battle of the Bands?

A Battle of the Bands is a fun way to get groups of pupils competing against each other and a great way to sustain pupils' enthusiasm in practicing times tables on TTRS. This battle will be between all classes in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

    When will it begin/end?

The Fielding Battle of the Bands will being on Friday 17th December 2021 from 4pm and will end on Tuesday 4th January 2022 at 8pm.

    How to play:

Pupils can login via their personalised username and passwords. If they are unsure of this, they can check with their class teacher.

Click here to access the site.

    How to earn points:

Every correct answer in any game type is worth 1 point towards the class team. Pupils can play in Garage, Rock Slam, Soundcheck, etc and earn 1 point per correct answer.

Pupils should not confuse Battle points with coins! Coins are separate. They will still earn 10 coins per correct answer in the Garage, 5 per correct Soundcheck and 1 coin per correct answer everywhere else.

    Prizes

The winning class will be announced on Wednesday 5th January 2022 and will win:

    • The TTRS Wrangle Trophy to keep until the end of term
    • An inflatable guitar to keep until the of term
    • TTRS Certificate
    • Recognition on our TTRS Leader Board

From the winning class, the pupil who scores the most points for their class team will win:

    • TTRS Keyring
    • TTRS Pencil
    • TTRS Certificate
    • Recognition on our TTRS Leader Board

TTRS promotes the "little and often" technique which is why pupils only need to play between 3-10 minutes a day as part of their daily practice and whilst doing this over the half-term they will be earning those points for their class band!

We look forward to see how this Battle of the Bands 'rocks' out and as the Maths Lead, I look forward to announcing the first ever winners on Wednesday 5th January!

  • COVID-19: Take lateral flow test before returning to school in January

Fri 17 Dec 2021 Peter Dunmall

Anna Bryden, Ealing's Director of Public Health, is advising primary school households to take lateral flow tests before pupils return to school on Wednesday 5 January 2022.

Tests should be taken either the night before or the morning of the first day of term.

Many Fielding households are already testing regularly. This is helping to reduce the spread of infection in school. This means more pupils can learn in school rather than learning at home.

The decision to take lateral flow tests is for each family but is strongly encouraged.

    Get your lateral flow tests:

  • PTFA: A £15,000 thank you

Thu 16 Dec 2021 Nolan O'Connor and Peter Dunmall

It's the end of term and we're all ready for a much needed break. But before we all disappear, we want to say a huge 'thank you' to all the parents, carers and teachers who helped support our Christmas market and online activities this year. So far, it looks like we raised an incredible £15,000!

This is an amazing result and we're on track for our £35,000 target this year. Our big winners were Christmas Raffle, Silent Auction, Bottle Tombola, Grotto and Reindeer Poop Bingo. But whether you've donated money or goods, won an auction, bought tickets for Santa's grotto or knocked down that pesky elf, every little bit has helped, immensely. And all of this at a time when many of us have been battling illness and caring for others too, so thank you.

We'd also like to say a massive thank you to the PTFA reps team and to all the parents who helped run our Christmas events this year. Without your support, none of this would have been possible and it's so amazing to see what we've achieved together. We feel humbled to be part of this community.  We're always looking for more volunteers, even if you can only do a little here and there. To get involved and find out more about what activities we're planning for spring and summer 2022, please mark your calendars to attend our first PTFA meeting of the year on 10 Jan at either 10am or 8.30pm. We'll share more details on how to join in the new year.

For now, have a wonderful and relaxing break and we look forward to working together with you again on our 2022 events!

  • Findings from Health related Behaviour survey

    Thu 16 Dec 2021 Miss L Stabler

At the start of October, Years 4 and 6 took part

Ealing’s Health Related Behaviour survey. This is a confidential survey that is used to gain children’s views on a range of health behaviour including:

    Home and family                       Health

    Healthy Eating                           Feelings

    Bullying                                     Alcohol

    Physical activity                         Smoking

    Leisure time                              Growing up

The results of this survey were sent back to us to analyse and summarise key facts and decide our next steps.

Summary of findings from survey :

    Context:

    • Pupils from years 4 and 6 completed the Ealing Health related behaviour survey in October.

    Positives:

    • Healthy Eating- 90% of pupils responded that they had something to eat at home before lessons on the day of the survey, while 10% said they had something at school and 5% had something on the way to school. Only 1% of pupils responded that they had nothing to eat for breakfast on the day of the survey.

    • Safe guarding - 74% who have been told how to stay safe online AND always follow the advice they have been given.

    • Health- 74% of Year 6 pupils responded that they got at least 8 hours' sleep the night before the survey with 2% responding that they got 'less than 6 hours' sleep the night before the survey.

    Areas for development:

    • Healthy Eating- just 28% of pupils responded that they ate at least five portions of fruit and vegetables on the day before the survey with 8% having vegetables or salad as part of their packed lunch.

    • Physical activity- just 33% of pupils reported that they did some physical activity every day for 7 days.

    • Emotional wellbeing- 33% of pupils responded that they were pushed/hit/kicked for no reason at least a 'few times' in the month before the survey; 47% said they were teased/made fun of. 48% of pupils responded that, in the last month, have at least 'sometimes' been called nasty names, threatened for no reason or ganged up on.

    • Dieting (Year 6 only)- 29% of Year 6 pupils said they would like to lose weight with 5% saying they would like to lose 'a lot' of weight.

    Next Steps:

    • Year 4 and 6 to do a repeat of lesson on being healthy and nutrition, linking directly to importance of eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables. Year 6 to also talk about what dieting means and importance of having a healthy balanced diet.

    • Sharing reminders and ideas to parents about a balanced diet, including amounts of fruit and vegetables to eat.

    • PE lessons in Spring term to further promote importance of daily physical activity.

    • Use January Values assemblies and Values lessons to focus on how we treat each other and behaviour expectations (linking to Values of Respect and Responsibility).

    • To add an additional RSHE lesson to Spring Year 6 RSHE healthy relationships, that focusses on acceptable and unacceptable ways of treating each other.

    Thank you

  • COVID-19: Close contacts of a positive case

Wed 15 Dec 2021 Peter Dunmall

Close contacts will be identified via NHS Test and Trace. Children and and fully vaccinated adults, do not need to self-isolate if they live in the same household as someone with COVID-19, or are a close contact of someone with COVID-19.

From 14 December 2021,  all children over 5 in close contact of someone with COVID-19 are strongly advised to take a lateral flow test every day for 7 days and continue to attend school as normal, unless they have a positive test result.

Daily testing of close contacts applies to all contacts who are:

    • fully vaccinated adults – people who have had 2 doses of an approved vaccine
    • all children and young people aged 5 to 18 years and 6 months, regardless of their vaccination status
    • people who are not able to get vaccinated for medical reasons
    • people taking part, or have taken part, in an approved clinical trial for a COVID-19 vaccine

Children under 5 years are exempt from self-isolation and do not need to take part in daily testing of close contacts.

If your child tests positive for COVID-19 then they should isolate at home for 10 days.

    Testing

We continue to encourage as many pupils, parents and members of staff as possible to test daily using a lateral flow device (LFD). This helps show any asymptomatic infection and reduces risk of infection transmission in school.
