  • Fielding win Featherstone Kurling competition

Mon 31 Jan 2022 Dan Thomas

On Thursday 20th January, Fielding took 2 teams to Villiers High School to compete in this years New Age Kurling competition. New Age Kurling is in the indoor version of Curling, the Winter Olympic sport played on ice where players try to glide stones closer to a target than the opposing team. We had a Year 5&6 team in the upper KS2 competition and a Year 3 team in the lower KS2 competition. Both teams were excellent and at the end of the day we were very proud to see our Year 3 team crowned champions in the lower KS2 competition.

One of our Year 6 Kurling team, Yahya, was asked to go home and write up a report of the day. Thank you Yahya, here it is...

'I was selected with other pupils in the school to represent Fielding in a Kurling competition against other schools in the local area and I have been chosen to describe the experience. We travelled by minibus to Villiers High School where the competition was held.

In the Kurling competition we played 5 games, 3 games in the first half and then 2 in the second half.

There were two separate competitions, Year 3 in one competition and Year 5 and 6 in the other competition. In the Year 5 and 6 competition, in the first half we tied 1 and lost 2 games. In the second half we tied 1 and won 1 game.

After the first half, the Year 5 and 6 team were placed 3rd in Group B. It was split into 2 groups, A and B, but in the overall scoring at the end of the competition the Year 5 and 6 team were placed in 5th place. The Year 3 team were brilliant and came 1st in their competition and won gold medals and a trophy. The trophy now goes in the trophy cabinet at Fielding Primary School.

Fielding Primary School is a very great school because of the competitions they're competing in, which gives students the opportunity to try something new such as Kurling.'

  • KS2 Swimming Update

Fri 28 Jan 2022 Dan Thomas

Our catch up swimming lessons are well under way for our Key Stage 2 children at Acton Leisure Centre. Our aim is that every child that leaves us in Year 6 is able to confidently swim 25m which is why we started by offering lessons to children who needed them in Year 6. We have now completed our waiting list of children in Year 6 who stated they needed lessons and so have moved on to Year 5 children. When we have completed the Year 5 waiting list we will then move on to Year 4.

If you want your child to have catch up swimming lessons because they cant swim 25m at all or can't swim it confidently you can still complete the survey below to add them to the waiting list. If you have already completed the survey your child will already be on the waiting list and you will be notified when it is your child's turn for swimming lessons.

  • COVID-19: Increasing risk of classes being sent home

Fri 28 Jan 2022 Peter Dunmall

Teacher absence and staff shortages mean that pupils are at an increasing risk of being sent to home. Parents should make contingency plans for pupils to learn at home if we are forced to close a class, including at short-notice.

Increasing teacher absence through this week has resulted in every available adult being re-deployed to teach a class. Our teacher supply agencies tell us that they have no more teachers available. Class 6P (Miss Abed) is being split and combined with other year 6 classes today to keep all pupils in school. Floor space limits how many classes can be split and combined.

Closing a class and sending pupils to learn at home is a last resort, for as short a time as possible. If pupils are sent home, they will switch to remote learning using Microsoft Teams. Teachers in school will set assignments to complete at home and/or work in a hybrid way. Hybrid teaching involves teaching the class in school and pupils at home at the same time.

COVID-19 infection remains high in school. In the last 10 days, 73 pupils and 6 members of staff have tested positive.  5 classes are at or above DfE thresholds of 5 or more cases. Other teachers are recovering from COVID infection or have seasonal illness. We continue to talk to colleagues at the local authority and local public health teams.

  • Fielding celebrates World Book Day on 4th March with Shoe Box Scenes

    Thu 27 Jan 2022 P. Whaley

World Book Day celebrates its 25th birthday on 3rd March 2022 with a focus on helping children discover a love for reading. This will be the charity's biggest campaign to date, providing more  opportunities for children to receive their £1 book. The theme is 'You are a reader'.

Fielding will be celebrating World Book Day on 4th March and this year, we are NOT asking pupils to dress up but to get creative in another way. Teachers will be asking pupils to design a shoe box scene from part of their favourite book and use this to recommend a book to their class. For example, if a pupil likes Fantastic Mr Fox then they could make the foxes in the tree with their family, or Miss Honey’s classroom complete with a lizard in a glass. Please see some examples below for ideas.

Some pupils may choose to bring in the shoe box scene on 4th March while others may prefer to take a video or photo of them to be shared by Microsoft Teams during the day. In line with the theme  'you are a reader',  alongside the shoebox, pupils are encouraged to bring in their favourite book so they can share it with their class in a 'ten minute read' during the day.

Please click here to find further information on World Book Day.

We'd like to take this opportunity to remind parents about our 40 recommended reading book challenge. It's a pleasure to see so many children earning their certificates. If you have any of these books, or others by the same authors, that are no longer needed at home, please donate to one of our libraries. Mrs Hodge and our team of pupil librarians will be more then happy to receive them!

Find out more about our recommended books and how we teach reading by clicking here. You can even find out what got some of our teachers (past and present) into reading, and what they read as a child.

  • PTFA: Working group needed for Circus

    Wed 26 Jan 2022 PTFA

Some parents may remember that Happy's Circus visited Fielding in 2019 and raised over £7,000 for the PTFA.  The Circus is coming back on 14/15 May 2022 and we need a small working party to help organise activities.  We'll be sharing the workload with St.Marks Primary School in Hanwell, but tasks will include; looking for sponsorship, agreeing pricing strategy, agreeing stalls to run alongside the circus, organising a bar, sourcing potential food options or picnic hampers amongst others.  Our PTFA chair, Nolan O'Connor will head up the working group, but he needs some parents to join the group. It will only require one online meeting per month and maybe an hour for tasks that drop out of the meetings.  If you are interested in getting involved in this wonderful community project please email fieldingPTFA@gmail.com.  You might also find that your employer is willing to support you in the time you give to working on this charitable event!

  • PTFA: Knowing your class parents

    Wed 26 Jan 2022 PTFA

Fielding prides itself on its community atmosphere. However, the past 24 months of Covid restrictions has meant that many new parents joining the school have not really had a chance to get to know each other - or match them to the pupils' names in their own child's class/nursery.

Fielding PTFA uses a platform called ClassList which allows parents to see who else is in their son/daughter's class.  ClassList also doubles up as a communications function for the PTFA for news, events and fundraising efforts. You'll also be able to find out who your Class Reps are, plus find out details of the class WhatsApp group.  We'll also launch tickets sales for the upcoming Circus via ClassList.

You can download ClassList as an app or it can be used via a web browser.  You can decide how regularly you want to receive information - normally a weekly email on a Thursday will suffice.  Sign up to your class today https://classlist.page.link/572mUDSt3HhfAynNA

  • Reporting positive COVID result to us, updated

Tue 25 Jan 2022 Clare Haines

From Monday we would like parents to  report positive COVID cases to us via our online form only. At the moment we are receiving information in a variety of ways, which slows the information getting to class teachers, or requires a call back to parents if we haven't got all the information we need.

The form captures all the information we need to collect. From Monday any notifications received by phone or email will be redirected to our form. This help us to communicate information in school in a timely way so that teachers know who to include in the day's hybrid-teaching. Please complete the form by 8.15am. Any notifications received after this time will be added to hybrid teaching for the next day.

There is also a link to the form on our weekly bulletin, on our COVID webpage and on our Facebook and twitter feeds.
