  • Waiting lists for Autumn 2022 Specialist Clubs

Thu 30 Jun 2022 Karen Esprit

Valuing parents feedback. As part of our ongoing improvements for clubs we are currently reviewing the waiting lists from the current term.

In preparation for Autumn 2022 clubs launch please review your child's waiting list options.

If your child is currently on a waiting list for a specialist club but no longer requires a place next term please either remove their name from the list in MCAS or email clubs@fielding.ealing.sch.uk with your child's name, class and club that is no longer required.

If your child's name remains on the waiting list and a space is available they will be pre-booked and charged before the launch evening.

This must be actioned by Sunday 3rd July.

Please help us to keep this new process as smooth as possible by tidying up your child's MCAS account and clearing all outstanding fees.

  • PTFA School's Out Summer Picnic Tickets on Sale

    Wed 29 Jun 2022 PTFA

Back by popular demand, the Summer Picnic returns to the school grounds on Saturday 16 July 2022, from 2pm to 9pm. It will be a great day for parents and carers to mingle while the kids are free to play on the school field. It's also the last weekend before the children break up for the summer. For Y6 pupils it will be the last event they have at the school, while for many nursery parents it will be their first opportunity to get to know who will be in their Reception classes for 2022/23.

Bring a picnic and picnic rug (or camping chairs) and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with friends. The gates will only be opened (for entry and exit) at 2pm and 5pm, 7pm and 9pm so that the kids can run about in safety with the gates locked at the other times. We'll have a BBQ, Refreshments, a Fire Engine (pending no emergencies) and other games during the day.

Tickets are on sale now.  Early bird tickets are £5 per family until 12 July - a 50% reduction. After that prices rise to £10.  Thank you to our sponsors Sargeants Estate Agents - based on Northfield Avenue - for their support at this event.  Visit https://www.tickettailor.com/events/fieldingptfa/  If you can support us with 30mins or 60mins to help run the bar or BBQ visit https://fieldingptfa.ivolunteer.com/fieldingpicnic_002

  • WWF and RSPCA charity day - 12th July

    Tue 28 Jun 2022

Each year, Fielding pupils choose 3 charities to support which include: one local charity, one national and one global. This year the pupils have chosen to  support: Ealing Food, the RSPCA and World Wildlife Fund (WFF). For more information about how we choose charities, please see here.

This term, we are supporting The WWF and the RSPCA.

As both of these charities support animals, we are asking children to decorate an animal mask. There are templates available on the WWF website, should you wish to use them. Class teachers will also have a selection to distribute to those who would like one. On the 12th July, there will be class parades for those with masks. In return we ask for a small monetary donation, which will be split equally between the two charities. Anyone wishing to donate, can do so by handing cash to their child’s class teacher on the 12th July.

  • Exceptional phonics learning

Fri 24 Jun 2022 Peter Dunmall

Nearly every pupil in Year 1 has met the standard for the phonics screening check:

    • 97% pupils reached the pass mark of 32+ out of 40 marks;
    • 78% pupils achieved very highly with 37+ out of 40 marks.

We are delighted with these results for our pupils. This reflects the work of every adult in school who has worked with this group of pupils from Reception and Year 1. It is also thanks to all of the practice that parents do at home, giving children time to read and rehearse the letters and sounds that they know.

Individual pupils' results will be published in annual pupil progress reports on 12 July.

Phonics is very important to us. Learning to read by matching letters to sounds is a key milestone in a child's learning at primary school. Rightly, our ambition and expectations for our pupils is very high. We aim for our pupils to achieve high marks, not just meeting but smashing the threshold pass of 32 marks.

The phonics screening check is a government test for children at the end of Year 1. Pupils take the test one-to-one, usually with their class teacher. Whilst children learn phonics to help them with both word reading and spelling, the Phonics Screening Check only tests their skills at word reading. This is sometimes called decoding. During the Phonics Screening Check, children are asked to read (decode) 40 words. Most of these words are real words but some are pseudo-words. Pseudo-words are included to ensure that children are using their decoding skills and not just relying on their memory of words they have read before. Some children may misread these pseudo-words based on their similarity to words in their existing vocabulary, so each pseudo-word is clearly identified with an image of an alien. This means most teachers and children, refer to pseudo-words as 'alien' words.

Our results mean that our pupils can access the whole curriculum, especially from Year 3 onwards. For the 4 pupils who are yet to pass, we will work intensively with them from now and through Year 2.

  • Today's Virtual Author visit in Years 5 & 6 and Reading Celebrations

    Fri 24 Jun 2022 P. Whaley

Pupils in Years 5 and 6 are looking forward to a Virtual Author visit at 10:30am this morning from Hana Tooke, author of, 'The Midnighters.' To find out further information, please click here. This follows the success of previous virtual author visits during Spring and Summer term.

Hana Tooke grew up on a polder near Amsterdam, in a house filled with peculiar clocks and a head filled with a peculiar imagination. She's been a singer, a teacher, and even a mad-scientist, but these days she spends her days writing stories, sculpting puppets, and collecting curiosities. She lives in Bath with two humans, a cat, and a skeleton marionette. Her debut novel, The Unadoptables, was shortlisted for the Bath Children's Novel Award and longlisted for the Branford Boase.

Even more pupils at Fielding have been awarded Bronze, Silver, Gold and even Platinum Reading Awards. These are achieved for pupils having read  5, 10, 15 or 25 books from their year group recommended reading lists and completing response activities (from the options provided in their reading record). Response activities can be submitted to class teachers on Teams under their class notebook, in the recommended reading section or handed in to their class teachers in person. We look forward to celebrating more reading achievements next week!

You can view your child's current recommended reading list when you sign their reading record or click on this link and scroll to the bottom of the page. English | Fielding Primary School. In preparation for next academic year, teachers have updated the  lists to include even more of a diverse range. These can also be viewed by following the above link. These will be published in your child’s new reading record which they will receive in September.

£1500 has been spent on new book stock in the KS1 and KS2 libraries and the delivery has arrived! Children will have an opportunity to look at the new books during their timetabled library sessions with our school librarian, Mrs Hodge, and will continue to be able to borrow books to bring home. Please do ensure that your child remembers to return the books once they have finished reading them so that others can enjoy them.

Please do continue to take the time to read daily with and/or listen to your child read for 20 minutes and sign their reading record. This is invaluable as it instils a love of reading amongst our pupils and essential to teachers as they continue to monitor the books that their pupils are reading at home and recommend new books based on their interests.
