  • Summer Reading Challenge and this year's Reading Celebrations

    Fri 22 Jul 2022 P. Whaley

    This summer, children aged 4-11 can visit their library to meet the Gadgeteers and to get involved in a science and innovation themed Summer Reading Challenge.

    Organised by charity The Reading Agency and the UK public library network since 1999, the Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest annual reading promotion for children aged 4 to 11. Last year, in Ealing over 500 children took part.

    Free access to books

    The Summer Reading Challenge combines free access to books with fun, creative activities during the summer holidays. Throughout the Challenge, library staff and young volunteers support the children, helping them to discover new authors and illustrators and to explore a wide range of different types of books and ways of reading.

    How the Challenge works

    • Children sign up through their local library and receive a Gadgeteers collector poster.
    • Children set a reading goal and borrow and read library books of their own choice during the summer, collecting special stickers to complete their poster and extra incentives along the way.
    • Library staff and volunteers are on hand to advise and run family-friendly activities.
    • Children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge are presented with a certificate and/or a medal.
    • The official Challenge website hosts digital rewards, author videos, games and more for children to enjoy all summer.

    Introducing... Gadgeteers!

    Through taking part in the Challenge, with free materials from and online via Ealing Libraries and the Challenge website, children will be able to meet the six fictional Gadgeteers. The characters – brought to life by children’s writer and illustrator Julian Beresford – use their curiosity and wonder to understand the science behind a whole range of interests, from fashion and technology to cooking and music.

    Through an exciting book collection and accompanying activities, the Gadgeteers will help to spark children’s curiosity about the world around them, and encourage them to feed their imagination over the summer holiday. They will be boggled by brilliant facts, gaze at the stars, and be inspired by tales of creativity and invention. With plenty of great options across picture books, early readers and middle grade books, there’s lots to keep children busy at their local library.

    Further information

    You can find additional information and free resources to support children’s reading for pleasure in the Summer Reading Challenge School Zone

    Pupils at Fielding demonstrate a real love for Reading and reading habits are exemplary across the school. The impact of this can be seen in the end of year outcomes in the subject and the number of pupils each week who receive Reading certificates in their reward assemblies.

    Now that Reward Assemblies have resumed in halls, it has been a pleasure to see so many pupils at Fielding being awarded Bronze, Silver, Gold and even Platinum Reading Awards. These are achieved for pupils having read  5, 10, 15 or 25 books from their year group recommended reading lists and completing response activities (from the options provided in their reading record). In September, pupils will be provided with a response activity book in which they are to complete the challenges. They will be able to hand this in to class teachers once they are have completed 5, 10, 15 and 25 challenges.

    A huge congratulations to everyone who achieved Reading Certificates this year!

  • Thank you. Looking back and ahead

    Thu 21 Jul 2022 Peter Dunmall

    Thanks to all families for your continued support this school year. We started the year working under COVID-19 restrictions, found a 'new normal', before finishing the year with a heatwave!

    We end this school year feeling proud of pupils' achievements and optimistic about the next school year:

    • overall, most pupils, including those with special educational needs, are achieving academically as well now as they did before the pandemic;
    • a key strength continues to be enabling pupils to read by matching letters to sounds;
    • pupils know and remember more from our exceptional, broad and balanced curriculum, with notable excellence in music, French and PE;
    • pupils take part in as many co-curricular opportunities as before with a rich programme of specialist clubs and other opportunities in school;
    • and enjoy the support of the whole school community, including through the work of the PTFA.

    For us, there is no sense of complacency and there are areas of our work where we can do even better and offer pupils more. Looking ahead to the next school year, priorities include:

    • writing,
    • getting ready to welcome pupils into the ARP and then to integrate into the main school,
    • better matching curriculum to the needs of pupils who have special educational needs,
    • filling gaps in learning for some of our disadvantaged pupils who were most affected by school closure,
    • improving how pupils understand themselves and how they treat others,
    • changes to our reporting and parent consultation meetings based on your feedback,
    • reducing food waste at lunchtimes with a new ordering system for pupils in year 3 upwards - details to follow early September.

    We anticipate an Ofsted inspection by the end of the Spring Term 2023.

    Investment in our facilities continue. The all-weather, multi-sport playing surface and complete re-laying and seeding of the remaining grass field will offer superb sport and play opportunities for our pupils - albeit with a little inconvenience now and at the start of next year. Building of the Wyndham ARP for up to 27 pupils with special educational needs is on-course for completion at the end of October 2022 with pupils joining our school from January 2023. New carpets in classrooms from year 3 to 6 and new technology screens for teaching will also be installed.

    We say goodbye to some of our colleagues as they move on to the next stage of their career or life plans, including much loved and respected Mrs Gill, Higher Level Teaching Assistant, who retires. We thank and wish them all the best.

  • PTFA Looking ahead - help needed

    Wed 20 Jul 2022 PTFA

    As chair of the PTFA, I continue to be incredibly humbled by the generosity and commitment from parents. While it's continued to be a difficult time for many, whether due to financial pressures, health or time constraints, parents across the school have really pulled out all the stops to ensure we all have happy memories of being part of Fielding Primary School and the events we run.

    I am delighted to share that the PTFA managed to raise over £55,000, one of our best yet and an exceptional amount considering the interruptions to live events from COVID at the start of the academic year. We relocated the Christmas Fair completely outside for the first time, ran the Secret Gift Shop, Quiz Night, Virtual Balloon Race, Circus, Summer Fair, Summer Picnic and of course our first crowdfunding platform which saw money come in from channels outside of the school.

    We're incredibly proud that the PTFA has been able to fulfil our dual purpose this year to both bring our parent/carer community together and raise funds for Fielding Primary School's extracurricular activities like the kitchen garden, library services, forest school, class trips, etc. - some of the many reasons why we all love to have our children at this brilliant school. A huge and sincere thank you to everyone involved whether as a class rep, committee member or class parent. We'd also like to thank any Y6 parents who are leaving us for the final time this week. Thank you for being amazing supporters and your involvement! You have helped to set a legacy.

    Looking ahead - help needed:  The PTFA is run by volunteers who support our school and feel incredibly rewarded from the amazing community their building, the new friends they've made and the smiles they've brought to our children's faces - and all without the drama or politics you might see on Motherland! Next year will see a change of guard when we'll need new people to step forward to ensure our PTFA continues to run. We're asking new and existing parents to step out of their comfort zone, try something new and support our school, and have some fun in the process. We've set up a mentoring programme to help parents who are new to volunteering and/or the PTFA to learn the ropes, so you will feel completely confident in what you're doing and it will be manageable for you. We have several roles that will need filling in September, including Chair, Treasurers, Events Team Coordinators and Communications, among others. Please email fieldingPTFA@gmail.com if you'd like to get involved or just to have a chat to get more information. We welcome support if even for 20-30 minutes per week and the more volunteers we have, the less time commitment for all involved.

    In the meantime, thank you again for your support of the PTFA and we hope you have a great summer!

    Nolan O'Connor, Chair PTFA, Fielding Primary School

  • PTFA Chair's message as activities raises £55,000+

  • PTFA Summer Picnic raises over £2,500

    Wed 20 Jul 2022 PTFA

    The return of the Summer Picnic after a three year break proved to be a great success with well over 400 people attending during the seven hour period.

    Although the sun was a cause for concern for many families, most managed to find shade under the trees or used gazebos to shield themselves from the heat.  Of course the Splash Zone proved incredibly popular as was the visit from London Fire Brigade.

    As a result of running a BBQ, Bar and ticket sales, the PTFA managed to raise over £2,500 from the event.  Many thanks to all those parents who volunteered to help serve or manage the gates.  These events do not happen by themselves.  Thank you again to Sargeants Estate agents for their sponsorship of the event and for Samosas Direct and Q-bot for getting involved too!

  • School closes at 1.45pm due to heat

    Tue 19 Jul 2022 Peter Dunmall

    School is closing early at 1.45pm today because classrooms are becoming too hot.

    Please collect children from school as soon as you can from 1.45pm:

    • Year 6 - Main Hall;
    • Year 5 - Sports Hall;
    • Year 4 - Dining Hall (usual doors);
    • Nursery, Reception, Year 1, 2 and 3 from usual classroom doors.

    If you cannot collect your child, we will look after them, using the coolest rooms in school, until you arrive.

    If you have booked after-school childcare or a specialist club, please collect as soon as you can. If you cannot collect your child, we will look after, using the coolest rooms in school until your arrive. Refunds for specialist clubs will be added to your account before next term.

    We tried to stay open to all pupils. We are sorry to close and inconvenience parents in this way. Temperatures in some classrooms have reached 35C at 1pm. Other classrooms are 30-35C. Yesterday temperatures rose by 2-4C in each room by 3pm. It's too hot inside for pupils to stay in school.

    There will be no remote learning because teachers need time to prepare and plan on-line lessons. They cannot switch to remote lessons this quickly.

    Temperatures are forecast to fall tomorrow. School will open as usual on Wednesday,

  • Fielding achieve Platinum Sports Mark and recognised at Featherstone Awards Ceremony

    Tue 19 Jul 2022 Dan Thomas

    The Featherstone School Sport Partnership held their end of year awards ceremony last week at Featherstone High School to recognise the achievements of schools and pupils in Ealing this year. Lots of awards were handed out and celebrated throughout the evening and we were very proud to see Fielding and some of our pupils recognised with various awards.

    Our boys cricket team who won this years Featherstone Best Team Cricket Tournament were awarded Team of the Year. The boys won every single game of the tournament on their way to victory and qualified for this years West London Finals as Team Ealing. Unfortunately, the West London Finals took place while the majority of the team were in France and so our tournament winning team were unable to compete.

    Five of our Year 6 pupils were nominated for Star Pupil awards. These pupils were nominated for their own individual successes this year in representing Fielding in various sports. Our nominees didn't win the award but each were invited on stage and awarded a trophy to recognise the nomination. Well done to Lachie, Harry, Arabella, Lily and Viv for their nominations.

    Our Girls Football Captain, Viv, was also recognised again as Star Player for the girls football team this year. Viv captained the Girls Football team to the Featherstone Final, Ealing Girls Cup Final and the Women's Euro's Final where we lost each final to Oaklands. On any other year we would have had a Championship winning Girls Football team but the Oaklands team was extremely strong this year.

    Finally, Fielding were awarded the 2022 Inclusion Award as we were recognised for the work we have done this year in increasing sporting opportunities for SEND children. We attended Boccia, Kurling, Bowling, Swimming, Panathlon and Football competitions all aimed at SEND children. Each of our teams prepared for the various sports through lunchtime training sessions at school and this hard work paid off as we won Gold medals in Kurling, Silver in Swimming and Bowling and Bronze in Panathlon.

    In other big news away from the Featherstone Awards Ceremony, we also found out this week that Fielding have been awarded the Platinum School Games Mark for this academic year. In order to achieve Platinum, schools must achieve Gold in 4 consecutive years and must then complete a case study to demonstrate how they use the School Games to engage people in School Sport and PE. This is a huge achievement which demonstrates the high standards that we have set ourselves over the years and the hard work that all of our pupils put in every single year to engage in PE and School Sport.

    Every one in our school community deserves a huge well done for all of our achievements this year and we now look forward to building on those achievements next year.

    Happy Summer everyone!
