We are thrilled to announce the launch of our very first Fielding Writing Competition for children from Reception through to Year 6. Since introducing the ‘I am a Clever Writer’ approach to writing I have regularly spoken with children across the school asking for their feedback. It has been overwhelmingly positive with children becoming increasingly engaged with writing and enjoying their writing lessons. The idea of the Fielding Writing Competition evolved from one of these conversations I had with a group of Year 5 children.
This exciting event is designed to inspire a love of writing, celebrate creativity and give every child the opportunity to become an author. Over a series of dedicated English lessons the week of 29th June, children will explore their imagination by choosing a picture stimulus and creating their own unique piece of writing in a genre of their choice.
Throughout the competition, pupils will plan, draft, edit and publish their writing, developing confidence and pride in both their ideas and presentation. Children will be writing for a real audience—their classmates and teachers—with the freedom to entertain, inspire or make others think.
We will be awarding two prizes per class:
One for content and creativity
One for presentation and handwriting
You can support at home by
Talking to your child about their ideas and encouraging their imagination
Encouraging them to describe characters, settings or events of their writing in detail
Reminding them to take pride in their handwriting and presentation
Celebrating their effort and enthusiasm, rather than focusing on perfection
Teachers will select winners and we look forward to celebrating their success with certificates and prizes in a special assembly the following week. Winning entries will be published in both of our school libraries, creating a lasting celebration of our children’s achievements.
We are incredibly excited to see the imagination, effort and talent our children will bring to this competition.
