Managing in the hot weather

8 industrial-size, portable air conditioning units are helping to keep classrooms cool.

Hot weather is forecast until the end of the school year. Thanks to Mrs Haines' contacts, HSS Hire delivered 8 units to us today. The units are on hire until the end of the school year. Initially allocated to the 7 warmest classrooms on the first floor for years 4 and 5 and Dragonflies Nursery, we have the flexibility to move units around the school.

This week, year 6 pupils are in France, giving even more flexibility to move classes to cooler parts of the school.

Roof lights to classrooms on the first floor and in year 2, remain covered, reducing the amount of solar energy heating up the building. Where micro-louvres have been fitted to the outside of windows, classroom temperatures are 2-5oC cooler than equivalent rooms without the micro-louvres. We are monitoring classroom temperatures to keep pupils and staff safe.

We continue to:

  • Relax uniform rules so that pupils can wear summer uniform including white polo or white t-shirt (or PE t-shirt) or any light colour top.
  • Maximise ventilation throughout the building overnight.
  • Use blinds and shade to reduce indoor temperatures.
  • Encourage frequent drinking of water.
  • Limit strenuous activity if temperatures become excessive.
  • Monitor vulnerable pupils carefully.

As you know children are more vulnerable to heat-related illness than adults, so we would appreciate your support with the following:

  • Bring a named water bottle to school every day.
  • Wear a sun hat (preferably with a wide brim).
  • Arrive at school wearing sun cream. Staff are unable to apply sun cream routinely, except where agreed arrangements are already in place.
  • Bring sunglasses if needed.
