It's that exciting time of year again! Get ready to rock out and compete for the crown (and the coveted inflatable guitar) as classes participate in the next Fielding Battle of the Bands over the Christmas break.
Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) has become a phenomenal way for our pupils to learn times tables, making it both fun and challenging. Our last battle during the Summer term saw fantastic engagement and fluent practice from all pupils. TTRS's carefully sequenced programme of daily practice ensures no child is left behind, and those who are confident can over-practice to achieve higher levels of automaticity.
To keep this momentum going, we are launching our first 'Battle of the Bands' over the Christmas break for this academic year, where all classes in Years 3-6 will compete for the top spot!
Why is this important?
Fluency and instant recall of times tables are essential for many future maths topics. Quick mental maths operations free up working memory for more challenging tasks. This foundation is crucial for pupils' success in mathematics.
What is a Battle of the Bands?
A Battle of the Bands is a fun and competitive way for pupils to practice their times tables on TTRS. This battle will be between all classes in Years 3, 4, 5, and 6.
When will it begin/end?
The Fielding Battle of the Bands will begin on Friday, 20th December 2024 at 4pm and will end on Monday, 6th January 2024 at 8pm. Winners will be announced on Tuesday 7th January!
How to play:
Pupils can log in using their personalised username and password. If they are unsure of their login details, they can check with their class teacher. Click here to access the site.
How to earn points:
Every correct answer in any game type is worth 1 point towards the class team. Pupils can play in Garage, Rock Slam, Soundcheck, and more to earn points. Remember, Battle points are separate from coins! Pupils will still earn coins per correct answer in various game modes.
Prizes:
From the winning class, the pupil who scores the most points for their class team will win:
Does my child need to play every day?
No this is not required. TTRS promotes the "little and often" technique, so pupils only need to play between 3-10 minutes at a minimum of 3 times per week as part of their practice. By doing this over the half-term, they will be earning points for their class band!
The Importance of Practicing Times Tables
Practicing times tables is crucial as it builds a strong foundation for future maths topics. This practice stems from number bonds and links to the intentions of Maths Circle's NumBots, progressing towards fluency, rapid recall, and reasoning problem-solving skills. Ensuring pupils are confident and fluent in their times tables will help them tackle more complex mathematical challenges with ease.
Let's make this Battle of the Bands the best one yet! Encourage your children to participate and practice.
Rock on, Fielding pupils!
