Bumped Heads at School: What Parents Need to Know

At Fielding Primary School, your child’s safety and wellbeing are our top priorities. Children are naturally active and curious, and from time to time, minor accidents like bumped heads can happen during play or sports. We want to reassure you that we have clear procedures in place to manage these incidents with care and professionalism.

What Happens If Your Child Bumps Their Head?

If your child experiences a minor head bump at school, they will be assessed by our trained Welfare Assistant or a qualified First Aider. Most head bumps are mild and don’t lead to complications, but we always take them seriously.

Here’s what we do:

  • Apply a cold compress and allow your child to rest.
  • Monitor them closely throughout the day.
  • Inform their class teacher.
  • Contact you by phone and send a follow-up email with advice.

When We Take Further Action

If a child shows any signs of a more serious head injury—such as confusion, vomiting, dizziness, or loss of consciousness—we will:

  • Call emergency services immediately.
  • Contact you straight away.
  • Ensure your child receives the appropriate medical attention.

Head Injuries During PE or Sports

If a head injury occurs during physical activity, the child will stop playing immediately and sit out for the rest of the session. This is a precaution to prevent further injury.

Returning to Sport After Concussion

If your child has been diagnosed with a concussion, they must:

  • reduce activity for at least two weeks.
  • Be cleared by a doctor before resuming PE or sports.

The earliest return to physical activity after a concussion is 23 days.

What You Can Do

If your child tells you they bumped their head at school and you haven’t heard from us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We may not have been aware of the incident, and we’ll always follow up promptly.
