Prioritising pupils' road safety

Keeping pupils safe on our roads at drop-off and collection times is a shared responsibility of all road users.  Whether children walk, scoot, cycle, or arrive by car, we all share the responsibility to make the journey to and from school as safe as possible.

Last week, a parent shared a deeply concerning experience while cycling with their 6-year-old son. A car, having just dropped off a child, reversed at speed along the school street, narrowly missing the young cyclist. This incident, while thankfully not resulting in injury, highlights the very real risks posed by unsafe driving near the school.

We understand that drop-off and/or collection times can be busy, and that families have different needs when it comes to travel. However, we must all take extra care around the school site. This means:

  • Driving slowly and cautiously
  • Avoiding parking in restricted or forbidden areas
  • Watching carefully for children crossing the road

Ealing Council continues to work towards a School Street scheme for Fielding. Last week, a ‘notice of proposal’ for the Traffic Management Order was published and there is now a 21-day statutory consultation. Subject to the outcome of the consultation, we will write with more information early in December for a proposed launch in January 2026.

The proposed School Streets scheme, which—if approved—will restrict vehicle access to roads around the school during drop-off and pick-up times. The aim is to create a safer, calmer environment for all children and families, reduce congestion, and encourage active travel.

Meanwhile, we ask every driver to reflect on how their actions affect others—especially our youngest and most vulnerable road users.
