The Fielding Guide to assessment 2025-26 for parents

How We Assess Learning at Fielding

We use a Visible Learning approach to help children understand:

  • Where they are in their learning
  • Where they need to go
  • How to get there
Our Assessment Principles
  • Every child can achieve – Teachers ask, “What do I need to do next to help this child succeed?”
  • We use the National Curriculum and Early Years Framework as our standards.
  • Pupils are expected to make age-appropriate progress from their starting points.
  • Teachers use assessment to plan lessons that support all learners.
How We Assess
  • Daily assessment through questioning, observation, and discussion.
  • Clear learning goals – Children know what they’re learning and why.
  • Success criteria are shared and agreed with pupils.
  • Feedback is ongoing – from teachers, peers, and pupils themselves.
  • Work reviews help us monitor progress.
Formal Assessments

We have two formal assessment points each year:

  • Spring Term and Summer Term
  • Pupils take NFER tests in reading and maths (and grammar for Years 3-6) for standardised scores and gap analysis.
  • Writing and Early Years are assessed by teachers.
  • Reading levels are checked termly to match books to ability.

Statutory assessments include:

  • Years 1, 2, and 6 – National tests in English and maths
  • Year 4 – National times tables check
Sharing Progress with Parents
  • Books sent home once per term for parents to review and comment.
  • Online reports after each data checkpoint, showing if pupils are working below, at, or above expectations.
  • Parent-teacher meetings in Autumn and Spring to discuss progress.
  • Annual report in Summer, including statutory assessment results and next steps.
