Mobile phone next steps

89 parents shared their views about our proposed new approach to mobile phones - thank you. The responses reflect overwhelming support for limiting or banning smartphones. Overall, most parents advocate for a phone-free environment to support children's development.

The vast majority of respondents believe primary school children should not have smartphones, citing concerns about:

  • peer pressure
  • age and/or maturity to use and cope with social media, including the risk of cyberbullying
  • concentration
  • addiction.

There is some support allowing "brick" phones for safety during travel to and from school but parents suggest strict measures for phones on school premises, including tougher confiscation and penalties. A few suggest alternatives, like GPS tracking devices, to ensure safety.

Many emphasise the importance of teaching children about digital dangers and responsible use in RSHE lessons.

We will discuss responses at the next governors meeting and finalise our approach, reflecting the views of parents.
