As you know, we always aim high for every child. We regularly review our curriculum to ensure we offer the best learning opportunities, based on proven success and solid research. Therefore, we are excited to announce we are refining how we teach reading.
The new structure will give children plenty of opportunity to develop their fluency, which in turn will support their understanding of the text and comprehension.
From Year 2 to Year 6, all children will participate in whole class reading, based on the approaches developed by Christopher Such. The key focus areas include:
Children in Year 1 will continue their phonics while implementing echo reading, as recommended by Christopher Such, to develop fluency. Starting in September, Year 2, Year 5 and Year 6 will adopt the new approach, with Year 3 and 4 following in January.
Parents are asked to purchase the whole-class reading book for the term. While many remain the same as in previous years, some books have changed to align with the school’s new reading approach. In addition to the hard-copy book, children will also explore a variety of other texts through extracts and resources provided at school.
You can find the book titles, and a link to purchase the book for Autumn term, on your child's Year Group Noticeboard for all year groups.
If your child has a Pupil Premium Passport, we will provide your child with a copy of the class book free of charge. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you do not receive a grant but will be unable to provide the book due to financial reasons.
We are thrilled about this new approach and can’t wait to see the fantastic results! Many thanks for your support.
