Embracing Values Based Living: Supporting Reflection at home

At Fielding, our values-based approach continues to guide how we help children grow — not only academically, but emotionally and socially. One of our core values is reflection: the ability to pause, think about experiences, learn from them, and make positive choices for the future.

As part of our Values-Based Living approach, we are offering practical ways for families to reinforce these values at home. By using simple and consistent language, we can work together to help children develop self-awareness, strengthen decision-making skills, and build confidence in managing challenges.

Why Focus on Reflection?
Reflection helps children become thoughtful learners and considerate friends. It encourages them to think about their actions, understand their emotions, and learn from both successes and mistakes. Reflection supports resilience, personal growth, and helps children take responsibility for their choices — both in school and at home.

How Can You Help Build Reflection at Home?

  • Talk about the day: Ask open questions like, “What went well today? Is there anything you would do differently next time?”

  • Model reflection: Share your own experiences and how you’ve learned from them.

  • Praise reflective thinking: Notice and name when your child pauses to think before acting or talks about what they’ve learned.

  • Encourage problem-solving: Support your child to think about different solutions when challenges arise.
