Safer Internet Day 2026 – Helping Children Use AI Safely at Home and in School

Monday 9th February is Safer Internet Day, and this year our whole school will be focusing on an increasingly important theme: the safe and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). With AI tools now appearing everywhere—from homework helpers to creative apps—it's essential that children learn how to use these technologies thoughtfully, safely, and with confidence.

At Fielding, pupils across EYFS, KS1, and KS2 will spend time next week exploring what AI is, how it works, and how they can make good choices when using it both at school and at home.

What pupils will be doing in school

Across the week, every class will:

  • Take part in a class assembly on staying safe with AI
  • Complete at least one age‑appropriate quiz or activity
  • Discuss how AI can help with learning—and why it’s important to use it responsibly
How you can support at home

We encourage parents and carers to continue these important conversations. Here are some high-quality, trusted resources you can use with your child:

💬 Simple questions to ask at home
  • How do you know if information from AI is accurate?
  • What should you do if an AI tool gives you something that doesn’t seem right?
  • Which tools are helpful for schoolwork, and which ones aren’t?
  • How much information should we share with AI systems?

These conversations help children build the critical thinking skills they need to stay safe and make positive choices online.

Our message to pupils

AI can be exciting, creative and helpful—but only if used safely, ethically, and with adult guidance. By working together at school and at home, we can ensure children grow up confident in navigating the technology that surrounds them.

If you have any questions or would like further advice, please speak to your child’s class teacher or a member of the safeguarding team.
