Cooking - WB 13.04.26

Please bring a container for your child to put their cooking in.

Thank you.

Design Technology

In Design Technology Year 1 will be learning about mechanisms. Children will be exploring, designing and making their own moving pictures. Do you have any children’s books at home with mechanisms? This could be lift the flap pictures, images that move side to side on a piece of card or even wheels that move around.

We would greatly appreciate it if children could bring books with mechanisms into school on Thursday 23rd April.

Exciting things we have done this week ...

We have enjoyed this week's cooking session, making stuffed peppers full of lots of healthy ingredients. In the garden we have weeded out unwanted plants, planted potatoes and went pond dipping. Lots of us found newts.

Coming up ...

Next week is our trip to Kew Gardens.

We start an exciting Design and Technology project about mechanisms.

Cooking & Gardening

We are proud to offer all pupils the opportunity to take part in cooking sessions during the school day. These sessions take place in the School House kitchen and are led by the class teacher.

Fresh ingredients from our school garden are used wherever possible, helping children learn about food, nutrition, and sustainability.

To support this programme, we ask for a voluntary annual contribution of £13.00, which covers the cost of additional ingredients for the full school year (September 2025 – July 2026).

To contribute, please log into your MCAS account

The fee can be found in the Clubs section and added to your basket

Your support helps us continue offering this valuable hands-on learning experience. Thank you!

Healthy Snacks

To help keep energy levels up and minds focused, we encourage pupils to bring a healthy snack for break time.

Great options include:

Fresh fruit or vegetables

Plain rice cakes or crackers

A small pot of dried fruit

Cheese cubes or yogurt (in a cool pack)

Please do not send sweets, chocolate, crisps, or fizzy drinks. Let’s work together to support healthy habits and happy learning!

Homework
Reading

Reading and/or talking about their reading to an adult for at least 20 minutes, 5 times a week. Complete your child’s reading record each time they read. Remember it doesn’t always have to be their school book. Reading records and reading books should be sent into school daily.

Mathematics

Numbots -Why do we use Numbots? Please read here to find out more about Numbots.  The programme helps children develop a secure understanding of numbers bonds using multiple representations. This consolidates learning completed in school. Children should aim to do Numbots every week for at least 10 minutes. We would like to thank you for all the support at home.

Number Bonds Challenge Every Monday, children will be given  a Number Bond Challenge to complete within two minutes. They will begin with Number Bonds to 5. If children complete the challenge successfully, they will move to the next challenge the following week.

Spelling patterns

Y1 spellings are due to be tested every Friday.

WB: 13.04.2026

Children will be tested on all the spelling patterns they have learnt so far.

Handwriting

Please refer to the handwriting sheet given out at parent's evening.
