Statements to Encourage Reflection
These statements and questions are designed to be simple and easy for children to understand, helping them learn about reflection in a positive and supportive way. At first, it may feel a little unusual to use the language of values in daily conversations, but with practise it will soon become part of your family’s everyday talk.

Reflection in Learning and Problem-Solving:

  • "You thought about what went well and what you could do differently next time — that’s great reflection."

  • "When you paused to think before deciding, you were using your reflection skills."

  • "Reflection helps us learn from what happened so we can make even better choices next time."

Reflection in Emotions and Behaviour:

  • "You noticed how you were feeling and thought about why. That’s wonderful reflection."

  • "When you took a moment to calm down and think, you showed great reflection."

  • "It’s helpful to reflect on our feelings so we understand them better."

Reflection in Friendships and Social Situations:

  • "You thought about how your actions made your friend feel — that shows thoughtful reflection."

  • "After you talked things through, you reflected on how you could handle it differently next time."

  • "Reflection helps us understand others and build stronger friendships."

Reflection in Setting Goals and Moving Forward:

Questions to Encourage Reflection:

  • "What went well today? Is there anything you’d do differently next time?"

  • "How did that make you feel? Why do you think you felt that way?"

  • "What can you learn from what happened?"

  • "Is there something you’re proud of today? Is there something you’d like to practise more?"
