Empathy

Statements to Encourage Empathy
These statements and questions are designed to be simple and easy for children to understand, helping them learn about empathy in a positive and supportive way. At first, it may feel a little unusual to use the language of values in daily conversations, but with practise it will soon become part of your family’s everyday talk.

Empathy in Understanding Others:
"I can see you were thinking about how they felt — that shows great empathy."
"You noticed they were sad and wanted to help. That’s a kind and empathetic thing to do."
"Empathy means trying to imagine how someone else is feeling — and you did just that."

Empathy in Actions:
"You shared your toy because you knew they would enjoy it. That’s empathy in action."
"You waited your turn because you saw they weren’t finished. That was very thoughtful and empathetic."
"Helping others feel included shows how empathetic and caring you are."

Empathy in Listening:
"You really listened to them when they were talking. That made them feel heard and valued."
"You gave them time to explain how they felt. That shows you care and understand empathy."
"Sometimes, just being there and listening is the most empathetic thing we can do."

Empathy in Friendships and Conflict:
"You noticed your friend looked upset and asked if they were okay. That was kind and empathetic."
"Even though you disagreed, you tried to see things from their point of view. That’s showing empathy."
"Empathy helps us stay kind, even when things feel difficult between friends."

"How do you think they felt when that happened?"
