Residential Trips at Fielding: Building Confidence, Belonging and Lifelong Memories

At Fielding Primary School, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Our residential trips programme is a carefully planned and progressive part of our curriculum that supports children's personal development, helping them grow into confident, resilient and independent young people who feel a strong sense of belonging within our school community.

Beginning in Year 3 and culminating in a residential experience in France in Year 6, every child takes part in a journey that develops courage, character and confidence through shared experiences and challenge.

A Journey That Grows With Every Child

Our residential programme has been designed to ensure that children experience increasing levels of independence as they move through the school.

Year 3: Camp Out Under the Stars Children spend a night camping on the school field, enjoying outdoor challenges, bushcraft and campfire activities. For many, this is their first experience of sleeping away from home. Being on the familiar school site provides reassurance while helping children take those important first steps towards independence.

Year 4: Hooke Court, Dorset, new for 2027! Children travel further afield for a two-night camping experience linked to their geography learning. Through coastal studies, river investigations and learning about farming and food production, they begin to experience the excitement and responsibility of a residential stay away from home.

Year 5: Isle of Wight Our three-night residential at PGL Little Canada develops teamwork, cooperation and resilience. Children challenge themselves through adventurous outdoor activities whilst learning to live and work alongside their peers in a completely new environment.

Year 6: Burgundy, France The programme culminates in a five-night visit to France. Here, children put into practice the French they have been learning since Reception, experience another culture first-hand and apply geographical fieldwork skills in a real-world setting. It is a truly memorable way to celebrate the end of their primary school journey.

Whether it is sleeping away from home for the first time, speaking French in a local market, overcoming a fear of heights or supporting a friend through a challenge, these moments help shape children's character and prepare them for future success.

We want every child to feel that they are an important part of the Fielding community. Residential trips create shared experiences that strengthen friendships, build year group identity and create memories that children talk about for years to come.

Living, learning and taking on challenges together helps children develop a deep sense of connection with their peers and with the school itself. They return with increased confidence, stronger relationships and a greater understanding of what it means to be part of a supportive community.

Importantly, our expectation is that every child can participate. We work hard to remove barriers to attendance, offering financial support and flexible payment arrangements where needed. We never want cost to prevent a child from accessing these life-enhancing experiences.
