Improving our curriculum

During this year, Ofsted consulted schools on a new inspection framework. This framework is due to be used from September 2019 and includes some key changes for schools across the country. Schools are now encouraged to put the wider curriculum to the forefront of its learning. This is done through a clear learning intent, a solid strategy for implementation and an agreed way of measuring the curriculum’s impact.

During the course of this year, key leaders and teacher representatives from each year group have been carefully devising a new model for Fielding. This model allows teachers to focus on learning that is most relevant for children at our school; identifying important events and people that have shaped this community, whilst still meeting the requirements laid out in The National Curriculum.

Based on a thorough bed of academic research, alterations to Fielding’s curriculum will enable children to learn key concepts through different Learning Challenges. There is a keen focus on the vocabulary that children acquire throughout their time at primary school as this is the key to gaining more knowledge about the world around them and on their early reading skills that allow children to explore everything that interests them.

The curriculum has been specifically designed to foster early reading and thoroughly embed key writing and mathematical skills in Key Stage One, allowing children to independently interact with a broader, richer curriculum in Key Stage Two.

In order to support the collection of high level vocabulary, Fielding’s PTFA have kindly agreed to donate nearly £8000 for a library subscription. As part of this, each class will be provided with a range of high-quality books to support learning and teaching throughout each challenge. Where appropriate, costumes and artefacts will be provided encouraging children to have first-hand experiences and get into role as famous characters.

Further details of Fielding’s curriculum will be published at the end of the academic year along with our curriculum intent.
