  • Girls Football Team Crowned Area Champs!

Fri 24 Feb 2017 Mr Thomas

The girls football 1st team beat 3 other top schools to become area champions and earned the chance to represent the whole borough in the London Youth Games. It was a fantastic effort from the girls and is a huge achievement which everybody should be extremely proud of.

We are now waiting with huge excitement to hear details about the event which will be held at Crystal Palace next month.

Check out the PE page for the full report and pictures.

  • Fancy Dress/ Football shirt donations

    Fri 24 Feb 2017

If you have any unwanted children's fancy dress costumes or football shirts (any child sizes) we would love you to donate them.  We have placed small green wheelie bins by Wyndham Road entrance for you to donate the clothing.

We intend to use the costumes to provide greater opportunities for role play at break times and lunch times in our performance zone. The donated football shirts will be kept for the children who need these for after school clubs.

Thank you in advance for the smiles that you are helping to create.

  • Playground areas open

    Fri 24 Feb 2017

New playground areas open to children next week.  All children will have up to 3 sessions during morning break and lunchtimes to play as a year group in the different spaces.

    Sand and wellies

Children may come home with sand in clothes and their hair as a result of playing in the sand pit.  30 pairs of Wellington boots, in a range of sizes, have been provided for our youngest children (or those with smaller size feet).  It is up to children to decide if they should or want to wear Wellies when playing in the sand.  We suggest wearing the boots if children are going to play in the sand pit for a prolonged period of time.  It is probably not necessary to wear the boots if in the sand for a short-time, on the pirate ship or running through the sand-pit, up and over the mounds.  Please talk to your child about whether you expect them to wear the Wellingtons.

    Closed at drop-off and collection

All playground areas and equipment are closed to all children, including younger and older siblings, during morning drop-off and afternoon collection.

  • Hockey Club on Wednesday Mornings has finished

    Fri 24 Feb 2017

  • World Book Day- Thursday 2nd March

    Fri 24 Feb 2017 P.Whaley

Dress-up, donate £1 and/or donate a book to class libraries

Some teachers and pupils in the school are looking forward to dressing up as their favourite book character for World Book Day next Thursday.  Other children may wish to also bring in £1 to donate to Book Aid, while others may wish to donate a reading book to class reading libraries.  The choice is yours.

We will be be celebrating all things books with an afternoon of fun-filled activities including year group book character parades for those who have dressed-up. Older pupils in the school will be visiting younger ones to buddy up for some paired reading and story-telling sessions and pupils will be entering the 'design a national book token competition.'

On the day, your child will receive a world book day token which will enable them to pick up a free world book day book or money off at their local bookseller. We look forward to seeing all the fantastic characters next Thursday!

  • Arrangements for publication of Ofsted report

    Fri 24 Feb 2017

    Several weeks to wait

The school was inspected by Ofsted this week.  It will be several weeks before Ofsted release the report for publication to parents.  Until the report is released, judgements are provisional and must remain confidential to school leaders and members of the Governing Body only.

The report will be published on our website with a link emailed directly to parents in due course.  Please be patient.

  • Playground behaviour and supervision,

    Fri 24 Feb 2017

    Next steps...

Following the annual parent survey and work with Keith Adams, external consultant, we have already made the following changes:

    • Improved the organisation of playground supervision at break and lunchtimes, including giving each age group named lunchtime supervisors and beginning to strengthen links and relationships between each supervisor and our children.
    • Provided even more training for lunchtime staff about play, behaviour management and the importance of their role.  From September, lunchtime supervision will be carried out by playworkers who will also work in our new Nursery, giving them an even better understanding of how children play and develop social skills.
    • Strengthened our teaching of personal and social education for older children to focus more on the things that matter to them now, including how they show our values through all aspects of school.
    • Adjusted how we respond to concerns about bullying, including how we communicate and follow-up any incidents with parents.

We are now going to also:

    • Increase availability of resources in the playground so that there are more things for more children to enjoy.  We also need to better manage how all age groups play together, taking turns to share things.
    • Continue to carefully monitor children’s behaviour and attitudes in school.
  • Strengthening communication

New calendar and changes to Year Group Noticeboards

Following the annual parent survey and discussion with the Governing Body’s parent communication working group, we are making the following changes:

    • Move the calendar from Laser to the main school website.  Parents will have the option of synchronising our calendar to a calendar system of their own choice, for example, Outlook or Google.  This will give updates as and when dates are added or when changed.  We will continue to publish dates for the whole school year by the end of July and rarely change an event once published.  We hope that parents will use our calendar to give a long-term overview of school events.
    • Launch an App, directly linked to the school website, to give parents more choice about how they wish to view published information.  This is not an additional ‘channel’ of communication: content replicates the web-site.
    • Refine Year Group Noticeboards to become a single point of reference for the age-group, including letters, home-learning, details about current learning and year group specific notices.
    • Shortening the Weekly bulletin and Latest News to only include whole school information.  Interesting, but less critical, information from year groups about learning will move to Year Group Noticeboards.
    • Consistently sending links from Latest News articles to Twitter and Facebook for those parents who follow us on social media.  This is not an additional information channel: content replicates the web-site.  Live updates about school events, for example, return to school time from a trip or latest score from a sporting event, will continue to be published on social media and the front page of the school web-site.
    • Continuing to welcome the use of social media by parents to support one another.  However, the school has no involvement in these groups.
    • Work with developers to improve the look and feel of Laser.  Continue to use Laser for individual booking, payment and email to individuals and groups.
    • In return, we kindly ask parents to
      • Check our calendar periodically
      • Read latest news and check Year Group Noticeboards weekly.  These are updated by us ready for publication every Friday morning.
  • Next steps for home learning and how we will share your child's progress with you

    Fri 24 Feb 2017

Next steps for home learning and how we will share your child's progress with you

Since the last survey, a number of changes have been finalised and made to homework arrangements, in consultation with parents.  However, parents continued to express a wide range of different views about homework.

Top education researchers tell us that homework has little impact for primary age pupils, unless it requires children to rehearse and practise.  Other commentators are increasingly highlighting pressure on children and the need for them to enjoy their childhood, having a break from school work at home.  Leading educationalists are also arguing the case for more creativity in the curriculum to better prepare children for the world of work, especially where it is predicted that many of the jobs that our 5 year olds will start are not yet known!

Enlightened schools have already made changes to reduce homework.  However, some parents still judge the quality of a school by the amount of homework children receive: the more homework, the better the perception of the school.

Our parents tell us that homework helps them to see how well their children are doing at school.  However, we believe that we can find better ways of doing this.

    Therefore, we are going to:

    • send class exercise books for English and maths home once during every half-term so that parents can talk to children about their progress and next steps;
    • publish all home learning expectations, routines and resources to help on each Year Group Noticeboard;
    • continue emphasising the things that children need time to practice and rehearse:
      • reading and/or talking about their reading to an adult for at least 20 minutes, 5 times a week
      • learning spelling patterns linked to age-related expectations ready for use in dictation towards the end of every week; with children’s work being sent home weekly
      • reciting multiplication tables to increase their fluency so that they can be applied in other areas of maths and problem solving; with children’s work being sent home weekly;
    • continue giving children opportunities to learn across the curriculum and be creative through our half-termly creative home learning, with written feedback from peers and the class teacher
  • Holiday fun at Fielding

    Thu 23 Feb 2017

The children and staff had great fun during the February half term week.

With an exciting week planned, the children experienced many new activities and days out. The trip to the science Museum was literally a blast; the children were thrilled at watching the 3D motion cinema  'Apollo 11 landing on the moon', they were literally rocking in their seats with the vibrations.

We were amazed how compact Tim Peake’s space capsule was, this prompted many interesting questions as you can imagine!

Later in the week they learnt to play ‘1, 2, 3 where are you?’ a game of hide and seek in the woods. It was fantastic to see the children playing freely in the natural environment, creating dens, setting booby traps and making mud cakes. Back at base camp the campfire was a new experience for many, learning to light a fire using a flint and steel and popping natural corn over an open fire was so much fun.

The next Fielding holiday club will be Monday 3rd – 7th April, look out for the next exciting programme a little nearer the time.
