  • Planning application for Fielding Walk entrance gate

    Thu 19 Jul 2018 Peter Dunmall

    A planning application has been submitted to Ealing Council, seeking approval to add a new pedestrian entrance gate from the footpath known as 'Fielding Walk' to the school site.  A new internal pathway from the gate to the corner of the Pirate Ship and playground, following the boundary of 'Fielding Forest' is also proposed.

    Two existing entrances to the school from Wyndham Road and Coombe Road are both heavily used at main pupil drop-off and collection times.  Expansion of the Nursery from January 2018, added an additional 30 places, resulting in over 100 pupils attending our Nursery at different times during the week via the Coombe Road entrance.  A change in Council admission criteria several years ago, removing former 'catchment areas' and replacing these with distance criteria from the school to home has resulted in more pupils being admitted to the school from the east and south of the school site.  The proposed new entrance gate and internal pathway to the main playground and classroom doors is intended to alleviate congestion and give better access to the school site to families living south of Haslemere Avenue (to the east of the school site) and Altenburg Avenue (to the west of the school).

    The new pathway will also benefit all pupils, allowing us to give children more time using the Pirate Ship, climbing trees, Fielding Forest, logs and mounds during winter/spring months as a result of the improved, paved access.

    If planning permission is granted, contractors are ready to start with the gate opening for main morning drop-off and afternoon collection as early in the new school year as possible.

  • More space for all year round play, PE and clubs

    Wed 18 Jul 2018 Peter Dunmall

    Plans are in progress to install a 1,500m2 (30m x 50m) multi-use games surface with floodlights to enable all-year round sports and play provision during and after the school day from 7.30am to 6pm.

    The school needs this space to

    • give pupils more space to play sports games at break times, reducing congestion in the playground during winter and spring months when the field is unusable;
    • enable PE to be taught outdoors all year round to two classes simultaneously without adverse weather creating an unusable field for much of the week during most of the school year;
    • offer pupils a full menu of specialist sports clubs all year round without being affected by weather or shorter daylight hours during the winter.

    We informally consulted residents two years ago when we wanted to build a multi-use games area adjacent to our Midhurst Road boundary.  We have listened to the concerns expressed by residents, reconsidered our needs and revised our plans.  We are now proposing to:

    • maintain our current playing space (equivalent to 3 football pitches) by creating 1 new all-year round pitch and keeping 2 existing grass pitches;
    • locate the artificial, grass surface in the centre of the field, away from neighbouring properties;
    • not install rebound fencing to minimise noise and maintain a line of sight across the whole field;
    • seek planning approval for floodlight installation primarily for our own use up until 6pm during winter months.

    Installation of a multi-use, artificial grass surface and floodlights is subject to planning permission.  Adjusting our plans, seeking quotes and selecting a preferred contractor and preparing our planning application has taken far longer than anticipated.  We will now apply for planning permission over the summer holiday break with installation taking place as early as possible in the Autumn Term, if approved.

  • So long, farewell...

    Wed 18 Jul 2018 Michael Mappin

    Dear Fielding Parents and Students,

    Please excuse the formality of this message...I'd much prefer to speak with everyone individually, but that just can't be possible.

    First, may I say a huge thanks for your generosity in giving me so many wonderful leaving gifts.  I have tried to reply to as many as possible, but I know I've not managed even half of them.  As perhaps the children will tell you, I'll be spending the vouchers on patio furniture for my new house.  As for the chocolates and wine, I'm sure I'll come up with a suitable solution!

    May I also say a huge thank-you for making me so welcome at Fielding.  I have always described this as my dream job, as I have been able to combine my two passions:  music, and working with children.  I hope to some extent that I have enabled the children to appreciate music, perhaps even inspired them to listen, play and enjoy.

    Professional to the last (!) I will not share here my contact details for when I move north.  However, I would love to hear from you, for you to share your news, and perhaps even to have a coffee with you if ever you make it up to the Orkney Islands.  I have left my contact details with Fielding staff, with the instruction to pass them on to any interested people once I have officially stopped being a teacher at the school, so do ask them.

    It has been a great pleasure making music with your children.  I wish you and them all the best for the future.

    Michael Mappin

  • Year 2 Outstanding outcomes at end of key-stage 1

    Sat 14 Jul 2018 Peter Dunmall

    The vast majority of Year 2 pupils have met the government's expected standards in reading, writing and maths at end of key-stage 1 assessments.  Around 40% of pupils met the standard to be working at greater depth.

    For our 13 disadvantaged pupils in Year 2, virtually all (11 pupils) met the expected standard in reading with 9 achieving the expected standard in writing and maths.  The school is committed to removing barriers and enabling our disadvantaged pupils to achieve and thrive.

    Since the end of Reception, virtually all year 2 pupils have made expected progress from their different starting points with up to one-third making more than expected progress - typically these pupils needed to 'catch-up' their peers to meet age-related expectations.  Such progress during Year 1 and Year 2 shows that there is sufficient challenge and high expectations of our pupils.

    Outcomes were highest in reading, closely followed by maths and then writing. Nearly half of pupils (48%) are working at greater depth in reading, far higher than 25% nationally, last year.  Reading outcomes have built on the strength of our phonics at the end of Year 1.

    The proportion of pupils working at greater depth in maths has increased to 42% as a result of a school improvement priority this year to change our teaching of maths.  Pupils have successfully developed a deeper understanding of maths concepts and improved their ability to apply their knowledge to new problems as a result of our use of apparatus, visual representation and emphasis on fluency with basic skills in class.  Last year, 21% of pupils were working at greater depth in maths nationally.

  • Year 6 Excellent outcomes at end of key-stage 2

    Sat 14 Jul 2018 Peter Dunmall

    80% 'secondary ready'

    Four out of every five Fielding Year 6 leavers have reached the government's expected standard (or above) in reading, writing and maths assessments combined.  This headline measure of school performance shows how many pupils leave a primary school 'ready' for secondary school.  The school has focused effort this year on improving this measure resulting in the large increase in pupils reaching 'secondary readiness'.  Last year, 66% of our leavers met the standard, compared to 61% of Year 6 pupils nationally.

    Nearly a quarter of our pupils (23%) reached the higher standard in reading, writing and maths combined; compared to 21% last year and just 9% nationally.

    Results in individual subject areas also improved where at least 85% of pupils met the expected standard in reading, writing or maths.  Our largest gains were in writing, where more pupils than ever before reached the higher standard (50%) reflecting improvements made to the teaching of writing over the last 3 years.  In reading and maths, 47% and 36% reached the higher standard respectively.

    Maths continues to be an area of improvement for the school.  This year, year groups 1,2,3,4 & 5 have changed teaching to deepen pupils learning, resulting in more children in these age-groups working at greater depth.

    Year 6 results were published by the DfE a week later than previous years.  Results will be posted to parents by Royal Mail tomorrow.
