  • Fielding Nursery holiday club, book now for the Summer Holidays

Sat 30 Jun 2018 Tracy Cherry

With less than three full weeks until the summer holiday begins, nursery are planning to have fun, fun, fun.

The children enjoyed cooking so much that we will be baking again this holiday and trying out new recipe's including pizza and fruit smoothies, we will also be making ice lollies to enjoy.

We will be making regular visits to the school allotments and helping to care for the chickens and may see an egg or two! And as always plenty of fun on the pirate ship and school field. We will picnic on the field when the weather is nice and join the Childcare Club to celebrate National Play Day on Wednesday 1st August. The Childcare Club have a great day planned for us to share.

We are also planning lots of water play with paddling pools, water squirters, bubble magic and target practice with wet sponges, so please send a spare set of clothes each day as they may just get wet!

There will also be lots of messy play to tantalise the children's senses, so remember old clothes for the holiday.

These exciting experiences are open to all children who currently attend nursery. Session timings and fees follow the same pattern as term-time and sessions can be selected in any pattern to meet your childcare needs. Please log into your Laser account to book.

Depending on your chosen sessions, please provide a wholesome healthy packed lunch and snack for teatime. Do remember to check that no food sent in with your child contains nuts or sesame. Fruit will be available throughout the day for the children.

  • Reception excellent learning outcomes

Sat 30 Jun 2018 Peter Dunmall

Most pupils ready for Year 1

85% of pupils in Reception this year, including all disadvantaged pupils, have achieved the government's 'good level of development' standard, reflecting their readiness to start learning in Year 1.

Last year, 83% of Fielding's pupils achieved a good level of development compared to 71% of children nationally.  Fielding's results have improved year-on-year or remain very high since 2013 when the school was just in line with the national average.

Children are defined as having reached a good level of development at the end of the Early Years if they have achieved at least the expected level in:

    • the early learning goals in the prime areas of learning (personal, social and emotional development; physical development; and communication and language)
    • the early learning goals in the specific areas of mathematics and literacy.

Girls perform slightly better than boys although our gender gap of 10 percentage points is less than that nationally.

Teachers have carefully planned learning this year so that pupils develop holistically across a wide range of areas in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

  • Year 1 Phonics excellence

Sat 30 Jun 2018 Peter Dunmall

    100% success in screening check

Every Year 1 pupil at Fielding, irrespective of their background or starting point, has successfully passed the Government's phonics screening check this year as a result of highly effective teaching and support for individual pupils.  Moreover, 80% of our pupils gained a score of at least 37 marks out of 40.  The threshold pass mark was 32.

Nationally every June, hundreds of thousands of five and six year old children in Year 1 take the phonics screening check - reading aloud a list of 40 words, which is marked by their teacher.  The check is a list of 40 words; 20 of them are real, 20 are nonsense words, such as "quass".  Nonsense words are denoted with a monster to make it clear to children that they are the monster’s "names".  These are included to show that children are using their knowledge of letters and sounds and have not merely memorised words.  Pupils apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to decode and read the words aloud.  Last year, 97% of our pupils met the required standard compared to 81% of pupils nationally.

Success at Year 1 in the phonics screening check is important to us because it helps our pupils to read fluently by the start of Year 2, providing a secure base to reach the higher standard of reading by the end of Year 2.

Highly effective teaching by all adults working in Year 1 has included daily teaching of phonics, identifying letter sounds which pupils find hardest to learn and providing support to individual pupils and their parents.  During Reception and Fielding Nursery, pupils are introduced to letters and sounds which provides an excellent foundation for the start of their learning in Year 1.

In Year 2, four out of five pupils who had to re-take the test because they missed the test or did not reach the pass mark at the end of Year 1 last year, also successfully passed the test this year.  These pupils have benefited from a programme of support during Year 2 to enable them to catch-up with their peers.

  • New outside learning space for Reception, September 2018

Fri 29 Jun 2018 Peter Dunmall

Construction works start next week to create a new outside learning space for Reception pupils.  The new playground is due to be completed ready for the start of the new school year.

Works during term-time will have minimum impact on the day-to-day running of the school.  However, access to Reception classrooms for morning drop-off and afternoon collection will only be available via the Coombe Road entrance.

    Our plans include:

    • giant 'natural' feel sandpit with running water stream, bridge, rock boulders and climbing tower.  Pupils will be able to divert the stream and pump water by hand from end to end
    • multi-tiered platforms adjacent to the existing 'sail' seating area
    • bike track
    • wooden village buildings
    • mini-GaGa pit
    • planting beds for growing crops
    • mud-kitchen
    • range of zones for flexible use during the year

Mr Webb, Reception Leader, and the Reception team have carefully designed the new outside learning space to give maximum flexibility and a wide range of learning opportunities for pupils which can change over time.

The improvements are needed as a result of Nursery expansion and the need for Reception and Nursery pupils to now have separate outside learning spaces.  The school is fully funding the works from an under-spend last year and capital funding this year.
