  • Fielding pupils raise funds for the Ealing soup kitchen

    Mon 30 Nov 2020 Clare Haines

    A huge well done to a group of pupils from Year 4 and a pupil from Year 6. Angus, Austin, Kit, Samson, William, Tom, Theo and Astrid got together last Saturday morning to do a sponsored litter pick in local parks in aid of Ealing Soup Kitchen.

    Between them they raised over £700 which will cover most of Monday evening night sessions at the soup kitchen during the month of February.

    This is a great example of Fielding pupils putting their values based education into practice to support their local community. We are very proud of you!

  • Self-isolating class returns to school early

    Fri 27 Nov 2020 Peter Dunmall

    Year 5 pupils, including all of Class 5H and their teacher, Mr McConnachie, can return to school on Monday 30 November. This is a week earlier than expected.

    The pupil who had tested 'positive' for coronavirus (COVID-19), forcing the class 'bubble' to self-isolate, has been told by the NHS that the test was 'void'. A second test, taken yesterday, is 'negative'. All pupils who were self-isolating are now welcome to return to school on Monday.

  • Staying open to end of term

    Fri 27 Nov 2020 Peter Dunmall

    National restrictions end next week. London moves to new Tier 2 rules. There are no changes to the way school runs. The government is also very clear that it expects all schools to stay open until the end of term, Friday 18 December. This week:

    • a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) resulted in all of the Class 5H 'bubble' and teacher, Mr McConnachie, self-isolating at home until the end of Friday 4 December (returning to school on Monday 7 December). Learning has continued at home using Microsoft Teams. Pupils say that daily, small group, video conference calls with Mr McConnachie have helped them most and let them keep in touch with their classmates.
    • targeted catch-up learning for some pupils, paid for using our (small) share of the government's catch-up funding continues. In maths, those pupils most in need benefit from their own tutor from Third Space. They work on-line, sharing a screen, focusing on the things they need most. Other catch-up programmes include Bedrock vocabulary, NCETM maths videos and focused individual and small group phonics teaching.  12 of the 34 pupils in Year 1 who needed to catch-up in phonics are now at the expected standard.
    • behaviour and attitudes in class are now better than pre-COVID times. Teachers' expectations are higher. A sharp focus on posture has resulted in pupils sitting better at their desks, marking the difference between being at home and at school. Our pupils are a credit to themselves and their families. It is delightful walking through the school every day.
    • teachers continue to focus on maths, reading and writing as a priority. Pupils all benefit from French, PE and music with our specialist teachers. Teachers are also managing to squeeze in other curriculum subjects. This week art in Year 1 and Year 3 has been especially strong.
    • More after-school clubs open in the Spring Term because we are confident that we can run them safely. Booking on MCAS launches soon. Find out more.

    Help us to stay open for as long as possible to as many pupils as we can. Please check and follow our expectations to reduce risk of spreading the virus as we approach the end of term:

  • Year 3,4,5 & 6 optimism about residential trips

    Fri 27 Nov 2020 Peter Dunmall

    New government advice, released yesterday, hints that overnight school trips could start from Easter 2021 if the scientific evidence supports a change. Currently, the government is advising against all such trips for schools.

    The government is expecting to review the advice to schools in February 2021.

    Year 4 parents, please note new provisional arrangements for the Museum of London visit, below. Other age groups remain unchanged.

    We recognise the enormous benefit to children from residential trips. Our provisional plans and bookings are:

    • Year 3, Camp-out on the field and bush-craft activities. We have made a provisional booking for 10-11 June 2021. Please hold the date. We will ask you for a deposit and final payment if we confirm the booking. Estimated cost, £49. Perhaps start setting aside some money now.
    • Year 4, Museum of London sleep-over. We have made a provisional booking for Thursday 27 May 2021. Please hold the date. We will ask you for a deposit and final payment if we confirm the booking. Estimated cost, £84 per pupil. Perhaps start setting aside some money now.
    • Year 5, Action and adventure weekend at PGL Little Canada, Isle of Wight. We have made a provisional booking for 14-17 May 2021. Please continue to hold the date. We will ask you for a deposit and final payment if we confirm the booking. Estimated cost, £265 per pupil. Perhaps start setting aside some money now.
    • Year 6, France. International travel continues be unlikely and poses too much uncertainty for schools. Our contingency plan is to offer Year 6 pupils their own weekend of action and adventure at PGL Little Canada, Isle of Wight (to replace the visit they missed at the end of Year 5). We have made a provisional booking for 2-5 July 2021. Please continue to hold the date. We will ask you for a deposit and final payment if we confirm the booking. Estimated cost, £265 per pupil. Perhaps start setting aside some money now.

  • Keeping children safe online - Game Review

    Thu 26 Nov 2020 Clare Haines

    It’s really hard to keep up with the games our children play online. The latest one to be the talk of the playground is Five Nights at Freddie’s. This is a game that can be played across most platforms.

    Although the main characters look cute, it actually has some quite scary scenes. This is why it is rated as suitable for children aged 12 and over. Take a look at this review to find out more.

  • Specialist Clubs Spring 2021 launch - Tried, tested and time to increase offer

    Thu 26 Nov 2020 Karen Esprit

    Government guidelines have allowed us to continue delivering our wrap-around childcare and Specialist Clubs throughout the Autumn term and we are delighted that our COVID safe measures have enabled us to do so.

    The children and adults have been fantastic at adapting to the new ways of working. Childcare being provided in year group bubbles and Specialist clubs continuing to run with a slightly limited ability in year group bubbles.

  • Social distancing at drop-off and collection

    Wed 25 Nov 2020 Peter Dunmall

    A low number of confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in staff and pupils has kept our classes open to more pupils for longer than other schools. Parents have played their part by social distancing and letting as many Year 5 and Year 6 pupils walk to and from school alone, at least part of the way.

    We cannot afford to be complacent, especially as we come to the end of term. No-one wants to spend the Christmas holiday break suffering from infection or in self-isolation.

    Help us to remain open to as many pupils as possible, for as long as possible, and reduce the risk of infection by:

    • using preferred gates so that everyone is spread out across the school site;
    • avoid family groups, 1 adult from each household is preferred at drop-off and collection times;
    • if High School siblings collect younger brothers or sisters, avoid their High School friends coming on to our site too;
    • Year 5 and 6 pupils who walk alone, avoid groups and stops to chat at and around our gates. Be considerate of others.

    Scientists say that being outside is a protective factor. This and the size of the school site means that we have not asked parents to wear a mask.

    • Adults and pupils who are Year 7 and above are welcome to wear a mask, if you wish, at pick-up and collection time.
    • Social distancing is safer than wearing a mask. Please do not swap space for face.
  • Drive and park safely

    Wed 25 Nov 2020 Peter Dunmall

    Parents and local residents are worried that car drivers are parking illegally or in an inconsiderate way when dropping-off or collecting pupils from school. The junction of Mervyn Road and Haslemere Avenue has been highlighted as an area of concern.

    The low traffic neighbourhood has changed driving routes. It is welcomed by some, including those who walk and cycle to school; while might inconvenience those who use a car.

    Whatever your views, as part of our Values-based school community, please respect the law, park and drive with consideration for others.
