  • Fielding Kitchen Garden

Wed 23 May 2018 Ellie Lock

The Kitchen Garden is taking shape as we get ready for Gardening and Cooking lessons after Half Term. Mr. Webb's class have already got stuck in with a couple of tremendous trial runs - there are clearly a lot of green fingers in RS.

We're working closely with the Fielding Environment Group, hoping to recycle paper and fruit snacks from the classrooms and minimise the use of plastic in the garden. To that end, we'd really like you to bring in your old loo rolls - cardboard toilet roll middles are an excellent biodegradable alternative to plastic pots. There is a green recycling box outside the Kitchen Garden, any loo roll middles will be gratefully received.

We'll also be growing beans in a jar with blotting paper, so children can see how roots and shoots form underground. If you have a clean jam jar or similar transparent container your child could use, please send it in on the day of the lesson. We'd also love any spare jam jars to be dropped in the green recycling box with the toilet rolls.

The beans which make it through the blotting paper experience will be grown up the hazel teepees you may have seen in the garden. They came from a bluebell wood in Hampshire - Mark the Woodcutter sent us some pictures, so you can see where they started life. Coppicing means new stems spring up every year, so Fielding beans will always have something to climb!

  • Yoga on The Field

    Wed 23 May 2018

Hi everyone! Lots of emails yesterday about how the class is going to work so here’s some more info.

The class will be a mix of Vinyasa ‘flow-style’ yoga and dynamic Ashtanga, so you can expect a decent workout, but more importantly we learn how to breathe properly and make space in those hard to reach places. Everyone’s invited, it’ll be an inclusive class with beginners and experienced yogis practicing alongside each other. Poses are adapted to suit us as we go and everyone will leave feeling refreshed and energised from the inside out.

When? Every Monday 8-845am, starting 4th June. And it’s ok to be a bit late if you’re dropping off at nursery or breakfast club.

How much? £5 per person (half goes straight to PTFA)

What about the kids? This is an adult only class, if needed children can be booked into breakfast club. Children should not be left unaccompanied or unsupervised.

What do I need? Bring your own mat, if not a towel, or just practice on the grass. (I never bother with a mat)

What if it rains? Unfortunately there is no inside space available so the session will be cancelled. Follow me on FB or text me to find out is the session is runningon the day: 07815148385

How do I access the field? Via the Wyndham Rd entrance. Through the school  reception. For safeguarding, everyone must sign themselves in at the front desk.

Should I book? No need to book but feel free to message me if you have any questions or are working with an injury or condition you’d like to chat about first. (terri@terrisinden.com)

  • Year 2 to Year 3 Harrisons Dinner Letter - September 2018

    Tue 22 May 2018

We are writing to parents/carers of children who will be in Key Stage 2 from September 2018 about school meal arrangements. As you are aware, your child may currently receive a school lunch, free of charge, paid for by the Governments Universal Infant School meal initiative. Once your child enters Key Stage 2, they are no longer eligible for this.

ALL Pupils currently in Year 2 will be required to register with Harrison Catering if you’ve not already done so, to pay for meals or register online with Ealing Council to receive free school meals.

Even if your child is going to have a packed lunch in September, you still need to fill in the form, so that they can sign up for ‘special meal’ days, such as Eid, Diwali and Christmas lunch.

If you have any queries please contact Harrisons direct  via email on ealingmeals@harrisoncatering.co.uk

  • Cooking and Gardening Lessons to start after half-term

    Thu 17 May 2018 P. O'Dwyer

The time has arrived! The new cooking and gardening lessons for pupils will start in the second half of the summer term. Pupils will participate in an introductory lesson in the kitchen, with their class teacher, and in the garden with our new gardener teaching assistant, Ellie Lock. The timetable for this is attached below.

Some important things for you to know:

    • On their allocated day, pupils should wear appropriate non-uniform clothing for gardening and close-toed shoes (Wellies will be provided at school if needed).
    • Children's health care plans need to be updated in detail on Laser as teachers will check these carefully for food allergies and intolerances when planning food preparation and will ensure certain ingredients are not used and that procedures are put in place to avoid cross-contamination where needed.
    • Each class in the second half of the summer term will have one introductory lesson. Lessons will continue in the new academic year with children in Years 3,4 & 5 participating in one lesson each half term, and children in Years 1,2 and 6 once every half term apart from the first half of the Summer Term (due to statutory testing).
    • From the Autumn Term, to support the effective planning of the lessons, and to enable us to provide the best possible opportunities for all pupils, in-line with our Charging Policy a voluntary contribution of £4 (payable via Laser) will be requested for each child for each half term. This will ensure teachers can buy ingredients needed to supplement fresh ingredients provided by the school garden. Please remember to add the charge to your cashbook.
    • Also from the Autumn Term pupils will also be asked to bring to school, on their allocated cooking day, a clearly labelled container. Pupils will then be able to bring home some/all of the food they have prepared at school to share with their families and friends.

The first lesson for each class will focus mainly on exploring the kitchen, the equipment and developing an understanding of the basic hygiene and safety rules with progression of cooking skills starting in September for all pupils.

This is an amazing opportunity for our pupils that they, and the teachers, are very excited about. Here's to home-grown ingredients and delicious dishes!

  • Responsible use of social media, and what to do if you have a concern

    Thu 17 May 2018

Social media and social networking sites play an important role in the lives of many. We recognise there are many benefits to communicating in this way, but equally use of these sites can also bring risks, or be harmful to others.  We recognise that good communication between parents and the school is the key to a successful working relationship. This article aims to give clarity to the way in which social media should and shouldn’t be used by parents in regard to school to ensure any issues or concerns are tackled quickly.

As a school our main communication channels are the Year Group Noticeboards, Latest News Bulletin via email and the website in general. We use social media to communicate latest news and updates about events, parents often interact with our social media posts and this is very much appreciated, thank you.

We are aware that parents use social media including Facebook and WhatsApp as a useful way to communicate to each other in relation to school events and activities. School has no input (nor should it have) in these. However it has come to our attention that some parents are using these forums to raise concerns. To ensure that all concerns are dealt with quickly and effectively we would like to remind you not to discuss children or concerns that are better directed to school. If you have a concern about school or your child, no matter how small, please contact the school directly via your child’s class teacher or the admin team at admin@fielding.ealing.sch.uk

For more information please also see our:

We would also like to remind you to not to post photographs taken at school events other than of your own children (or if you have permission of the other parents) on social media.

  • Shop on Amazon? They will donate 0.5% to the PTFA

    Thu 17 May 2018

If you’re like most us, you have probably bought a thing or two from Amazon. If you’re like some households, then the majority of your purchases are delivered to your door via Amazon. Why not make an impact in the funding for Fielding Primary School PTFA with the things you are already buying? AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon with exactly the same products, prices, and shopping features as Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organisation of your choice. We recommend 'Fielding Primary School Parent Teacher and Friends Association' as that charitable organisation of choice! Whilst 0.5% is small, the donations can really add up with the things you are buying. Here’s how to use AmazonSmile to help the PTFA funding efforts:

    1. Visit smile.amazon.com. And we recommend bookmarking this page so you’ll land on the smile page every time you shop.

    2. Sign into your usual Amazon account.

    3. Search for Fielding Primary School Parent Teacher and Friends Association as your charity of choice.

    4. Once you make this selection, you will receive an email confirmation.

    5. You are now ready to help raise valuable funds to help your child's experience at Fielding Primary School in your everyday purchases!

Sadly their isn't an option to use this service via the Amazon smartphone App, however you can of course use the web browser on your mobile via smile.amazon.com - which can be bookmarked or shortlink from your home screen - plus it uses many of the functions of your app. Attached is a sheet with instructions if you need more help, otherwise contact fieldingptfa@gmail.com

  • Ramadan

Thu 17 May 2018 Peter Dunmall

Ramadan began on Wednesday 16th May. For Muslims, this is the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. For an entire month believers will fast during the day. We recognise that although fasting for the entire month does not become obligatory until the age of puberty, sometimes Muslim children begin to fast before this age.  Children can get a sense of achievement joining families in taking part in the spirit of Ramadan. However, the younger the child, especially where Ramadan falls at this time of year, the more difficult it tends to be for children to fast without their physical stamina and concentration levels being affected.

Young children may wish to fast for half-days and eat lunch as usual, avoid fasting during school days, fast for selected days each week, and/or fast for the whole day during half-term when family members can supervise more closely. Whether a pupil decides to fast or not is a matter to be decided between parents and their children. We understand that breaking the fast before the correct time may be regarded as worse than not fasting at all by some children and parents.

If you feel that your child is able to fast and you would like them to do so, please discuss your wishes with your class teacher.  Pupils who are fasting for part or all of the school day may spend time in the library at lunchtime, quietly reflecting on their fast.  All children are expected to participate in all school activities during Ramadan.
