  • Year 2 Values Art work

    Thu 20 Jun 2019 Miss P. Whaley
    We are thrilled to announce that Reshma Govindgee, artist from Ealing Art House, will be joining the Year 2 Team over the next two weeks to teach and support the children in producing their long-awaited Values art work for the year. Children in 2F begin on Wednesday. The children will need to come to school in full school uniform  and then bring a spare change of clothes in a bag to change into. The spare change of clothes must be old clothes that you don't mind the children getting paint on. Although aprons will be worn, we cannot guarantee that it won't get on their clothes. 2F will be looking at artwork produced by artist, Julian Opie, and will be producing portraits in his style of significant individuals who the children have studied who have shown the core value of resilience; Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus. On Tuesday 2nd July, 2H will be looking at the work of artist, Lisa Milroy, and be producing pieces based upon heir favourite shoe. The children have therefore been asked to bring in one of their favourite shoes from home (this may be a football boot or a trainer for example- the more individual the better!) Their work is based upon the core value of Empathy and putting yourself in other people's shoes. On Monday 1st July, 2P will produce pieces based upon the core value of Reflection and the work on Monet. On Thursday 4th July, 2S will be producing parts of a tree which will come together to produce their 'Respect tree.' This will be based on the work of Van Gogh. The children are excited to begin work on their art project and we look forward to showing you the results at the end of term!
  • What are we raising money for at Summer Fair?

    Thu 20 Jun 2019

    Over the past five months, the teachers at Fielding have been researching the idea of renting 'Resource Topic Boxes' which contain a variety of materials that help bring to life a particular topic in the classroom. The PTFA have agreed to fund this service which will see 6 x Topic Boxes delivered to each class over the course of the year. Boxes will contain a mixture of objects that will be themed around a topic - such as The Roman's, The Egyptians, Space, Fossils, Evolution and are tied into the curriculum for that year group. Items would include: - Book loans - Wow objects like Sutton Hoo Helmet or 100 million year old fossils - Back drops - Maps - Posters - Story props It's an expensive service but will really enhance the pupils learning experience. Funds raised from the Summer Fair will help cover these costs.

  • Get ready to play outdoors when wet

    Thu 20 Jun 2019

    From September 2019 pupils will have the opportunity to spend time playing outside when we experience unsettled weather.

    Currently we have indoor wet play when there is a light drizzle or a downpour, however from September we will remain outdoors when, with some opportunities for those who prefer to be inside to use one of the classrooms.

    There are several benefits to this change of approach

    • Maximise the use of our outdoor space
    • Following NHS guidelines by providing pupils the opportunity to engage in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes and up to several hours every day
    • Movement breaks help to decrease stress, increases productivity, boost brain function, and provides opportunities for children to learn social skills. It is more difficult to provide this opportune during indoor play
    • The indoor circulation of germs and bacteria is much more harmful to children than playing outside.
    • Children gain the sensory experience of listening to and feeling different weather conditions.
    •  A significant number of pupils have expressed a desire to play outside during unsettled weather
    • For some pupils due to the lack of physical play opportunities, this leads to poor behaviour choices and some pupils experiencing less productive lessons after wet play.

    To allow outdoor play to take place both pupils and staff are expected to have suitable warm and waterproof clothing in school at all times.

    • Waterproofs – This may be a jacket, coat or suit
    • A warm fleece, jumper or cardigan
    • Winter hat and sun hat (optional)
    • Scarves and gloves (optional)
    • Wellie boots (optional)

  • Additionally resourced provision for children with SEND

    Wed 19 Jun 2019 Peter Dunmall

    Discussion about the potential for new development at Fielding in partnership with Ealing

    Ealing Council is committed to further developing inclusive education for all pupils in Ealing.  School leaders and the Governing Body of Fielding recognise this need and welcome the development.

    Some pupils who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) to meet their special educational needs require a higher level of support than can be provided by their local mainstream primary school.  However, their needs are not so complex or severe that a place at a special school is appropriate either.  To meet this need, the local authority maintains a range of Additionally Resourced Provisions (ARPs) and units at mainstream schools.

    The Council invited schools to consider developing an ARP for primary age children who have an EHCP with needs on the autistic spectrum or related speech, language and communication needs. This was discussed by the Governing Body which expressed an interest in developing an ARP at Fielding because we:

    • want all of our pupils to mix with a wide range of children, where they learn to respect, tolerate and empathise with others, so that they are well placed to confidently live in modern Britain;
    • have a strong sense of moral purpose and want to improve opportunities for this group of pupils;
    • have a strong, successful track record of meeting the needs of pupils with special educational needs;
    • aim to build skills and knowledge of staff to better meet needs of our pupils who do not reach the threshold for an EHCP but have a higher level of need on the autistic spectrum, our largest group of pupils with special needs at Fielding;
    • need access to staff, specialists and facilities on site to better meet the needs of our own pupils on the autistic spectrum or speech, language and communication needs.

    Typical features of an ARP at a mainstream school include:

    • an extension, or modification of existing rooms, to provide new classrooms and other spaces, including a sensory room, breakout spaces, meeting room, therapy room and toilets;
    • integration of ARP pupils into the main school for a proportion of their day with support from ARP staff;
    • a team of specialist teachers and support staff who are based in the ARP;
    • teaching of an adapted curriculum to meet individual needs of pupils in the ARP;
    • a limited number of places (up to 24) for primary age pupils who are organised into 2 or 3 classes;
    • a separate admissions process, where pupils must have an EHCP with the ARP named as part of the plan;

    The Council will decide where an additional ARP is located in Ealing according to its strategic needs.  Any decision will follow several rounds of informal and formal consultation to seek views from a range of stakeholders, including parents and staff.  Any new ARP is not expected to open before September 2021.

She helps out every week - whatever the weather - doing everything from digging up stubborn weeds to teaching the children how to speak chicken.

    Now the RHS has awarded her a certificate for being a School Gardening Champion - quite right too!
