Embracing Values-Based Living: Supporting Empathy at Home

At Fielding, our values-based approach continues to guide how we help children grow—not only academically, but emotionally and socially. One of our core values is empathy: the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, show kindness, and consider different perspectives.

As part of our Values-Based Living approach, we are offering practical ways for families to reinforce these values at home. By using simple and consistent language, we can work together to help children develop emotional awareness, strengthen relationships, and build a caring mindset.

Why Focus on Empathy?

Empathy helps children connect with others in meaningful ways. It supports friendships, encourages kindness, and helps children respond thoughtfully to the feelings of those around them. Empathy is the foundation of a respectful and inclusive community — both in school and at home.

How Can You Help Build Empathy at Home?

Talk about feelings: Use books, real-life situations, or TV characters to ask, “How do you think they feel?”
Model empathy: Show your child how you listen and respond when someone else is upset or needs support.
Praise kind actions: Notice and name when your child is being thoughtful or considering others.
Encourage perspective-taking: Help your child imagine how others might see or experience a situation.
