Keeping Children Safe and Cool During Hot Weather

As temperatures rise, we are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety, comfort, and wellbeing of all pupils and staff during hot weather and potential heatwaves. Following the latest guidance from the Department for Education and the UK Health Security Agency [1], we have implemented the  plan below to manage the heat effectively across our school.

Why This Matters

Children are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses than adults, particularly dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Our approach prioritises hydration, shade, ventilation, and activity adjustments to keep everyone safe.

What We’re Doing

Classroom Environment:

  • Fans are in use in the hottest rooms, especially upstairs in Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6 classrooms.
  • Windows and doors are opened early in the morning to release trapped heat, and blinds are drawn to reduce direct sunlight without blocking airflow.
  • Lights and electrical equipment are kept off or on standby to reduce heat generation.
  • If indoor temperatures exceed 35°C, fans will be turned off to prevent circulating hot air, and pupils will be rotated through cooler rooms such as the computing suite, dining hall, and sports hall for short cooling breaks.

Uniform and Clothing:

  • While school uniform remains in place, we encourage children to wear summer dresses, shorts, and plain light-coloured t-shirts.
  • Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen are recommended for outdoor activities.

Hydration and Breaks:

  • Pupils are reminded to drink water regularly throughout the day.
  • Break times are adjusted to ensure all children have access to shaded areas and time away from the heat.

Outdoor Activities:

  • Outdoor play and PE will continue only if the temperature remains below 30°C.
  • If the temperature reaches 30°C or higher:
    • All PE and outdoor breaks will be suspended.
    • Nursery and Reception children will remain indoors.
    • Assemblies and large gatherings will be avoided.
    • After-school childcare and clubs will be moved indoors or kept under shade with frequent water breaks.

Monitoring and Emergency Plans

We are closely monitoring classroom temperatures and are sourcing additional thermometers for upstairs rooms. In the unlikely event of a power or water supply failure due to extreme heat, we will switch to remote learning and notify parents immediately.

Recognising Heat-Related Illness

Staff are trained to recognise signs of heat stress, exhaustion, and heatstroke. Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, or confusion will be treated promptly, and medical advice will be sought if needed [1].
