Fielding
Primary School and Nursery
The majority of Fielding's Year 6 leavers have reached the government's expected standard (or above) in reading, writing and mathematics outcomes combined. This headline measure of school performance shows how many pupils leave a primary school 'ready' for secondary school.
The school continues to focus on improving this measure, maintaining very high outcomes compared to other schools nationally. Last year, 71% of our leavers met the standard, compared to 61% of Year 6 pupils nationally. Nearly 1 in 5 (17%) of our pupils reached the higher standard in reading, writing and mathematics combined; compared to 14% last year and just 8% nationally.
Reading outcomes are especially high. 9 out of 10 children (91%) reached the expected standard with over half (53%) achieving the higher standard, reflecting sufficient stretch and challenge by teachers. This reflects a change in our approach to teaching reading several years ago. Last year, 87% met the expected standard with 49% reaching the higher standard.
Maths remains a strength with nearly 9 out of 10 pupils (88%) reaching the expected standard. A few were just 1 mark away from the pass mark threshold - we're now checking marking accuracy. Nearly half (46%) met the higher standard.
Writing outcomes have improved considerably, reflecting our new I Am A Clever Writer (IAACW) approach. Nearly 9 out of 10 children (88%) reached the expected standard.
Looking ahead to next year, writing remains a school improvement priority to drive up the quality of pupils' writing even further by deepening and embedding the IAACW approach. We are also going to refine our approach to reading, following the work of authors Christopher Such and Doug Lemov.
