Primary School and Nursery
We are excited to share that this term, we are rolling out the "I Am A Clever Writer" (IAACW) approach to children in Reception, Year 1, 4, 5 and 6, this approach focuses on improving skills in spelling, handwriting, and grammar. This will mean that all children in all classes are following this approach. Children in Years 2 and 3 are already benefiting from this approach. We are seeing improvements in handwriting and sentence construction. Children have told us that they really enjoy the lessons as there is less to think about. This means they can focus their efforts on improving their spelling and handwriting and the one new skill their teacher is teaching them for the week. They also like the picture book approach.
We will introducing this approach to teaching writing during week starting 27th January. When the children's books next come home you will start to see some differences in the way they are working.
Don't forget to ask your child why they are a 'Clever Writer'!
Why the change?
The IAACW approach is all about building strong basics in writing. This change will help improve children's knowledge and understanding of the essential skills needed to be able to write accurately and confidently.
What to expect?
As we switch to this new method, you might notice that some children seem to have made little or no progress in their writing assessments, some might even appear to 'go backwards' for example was working at 'expected standard', and now 'working towards', especially if they have gaps in spelling knowledge or handwriting. This is completely normal as we gain a better understanding of the gaps children have in their knowledge. Class teachers are keeping a close eye on each child's progress and will provide the support they need to succeed.
Parent consultation meetings
We know you might have questions about these changes and your child's assessment outcomes. To keep you informed, class teachers will discuss your child's progress and the next steps during the upcoming parent consultation meetings. This is a great chance to understand how the IAACW approach benefits your child and to work together on ways to support their learning at home.
