LTN21, School's position

Fielding Primary School has a neutral position in the debate about Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTN).

The school had no involvement in the original decision to implement the Low Traffic Neighbourhood in the roads surrounding the school, or the decision to remove the measures.

The school has a neutral position for many different reasons.

Our role is to educate pupils so that they learn to use all roads safely, no matter what road arrangements or measures are in place or location in the world.

We aim to teach pupils to judge risks and make choices to keep themselves safe while being responsible and considerate of others.

It is for the Council, elected by residents, to decide how it wants to manage local streets.

There are strong, opposing views about the implementation and removal of LTN21 around the school.  The school, including its grounds, entrance gates and social media, must remain free from campaign material. Pupils, parents and staff should feel free to be at school, shielded from the debate.

In class, with older pupils, we may research and debate the issues associated with road use around the school site in a balanced way, drawing on our core values of respect and empathy.

Meanwhile, from today:

  • our twitter account is suspended

  • I will contact campaign groups to set our expectations.
