New outside learning space for Reception, September 2018

Construction works start next week to create a new outside learning space for Reception pupils.  The new playground is due to be completed ready for the start of the new school year.

Works during term-time will have minimum impact on the day-to-day running of the school.  However, access to Reception classrooms for morning drop-off and afternoon collection will only be available via the Coombe Road entrance.

Our plans include:

  • giant 'natural' feel sandpit with running water stream, bridge, rock boulders and climbing tower.  Pupils will be able to divert the stream and pump water by hand from end to end
  • multi-tiered platforms adjacent to the existing 'sail' seating area
  • bike track
  • wooden village buildings
  • mini-GaGa pit
  • planting beds for growing crops
  • mud-kitchen
  • range of zones for flexible use during the year

Mr Webb, Reception Leader, and the Reception team have carefully designed the new outside learning space to give maximum flexibility and a wide range of learning opportunities for pupils which can change over time.

The improvements are needed as a result of Nursery expansion and the need for Reception and Nursery pupils to now have separate outside learning spaces.  The school is fully funding the works from an under-spend last year and capital funding this year.
