Year 2 Writing a balanced argument

Should we save the environment?

During the past few weeks the pupils in year two have been focusing on the book ‘Dinosaurs and all that rubbish.’ The pupils have been creating a balanced argument based on the environment. At the beginning of the week pupils didn’t understand how to create a balanced argument or even what it was. Therefore the first task was to unpick the WAGOLL (what a good one looks like) and discuss the Rubric. The pupils were able to talk about and explore all the different features needed to create a balanced argument. The pupils used this new found knowledge to produce a plan.  Mrs Tate, 2P, explained, "Creating a balanced argument isn’t easy for anyone but the pupils really showed the value of resilience. Through doing this they were able to achieve the goals and objectives of the lesson.” After, the children had produced their plan they used the information to create their very own balanced argument. The work produced by the pupils was amazing. Their arguments had opinions from both sides, rhetorical questions, commands and exclamations. All these features combined to make an excellent final piece of work.
