Year 6 excellent results

Most pupils ready for their next phase of learning

68% of Fielding's Year 6 pupils met the government's tough new standard for reading, writing and maths. Nationally only just over half (53%) of 11 year-olds made the grade.

This year's tests were more demanding and were based on a new curriculum with far higher expectations than before.

Our Year 6 pupils have performed very well compared to all pupils nationally:

Fielding's Year 6 National Comparison
Maths, 84% 70% +14
Reading, 74% 66% +8
Grammar, 83% 72% +11
Writing, 85% 74% +11

Previously, attainment at the end of key-stage 2 was measured in National Curriculum Levels with Level 4c being the expected standard for pupils in their final year of primary school.

However, in the new tests, the expected level is set at 100 but scores can range between 80 and 120. This means that any score at 100 or over is considered as meeting the expected standard and anything else is below.

"We were especially pleased with our maths results this year because maths has previously been our weakest subject area at the the end of Year 6. Teachers have worked hard to improve the quality of our maths teaching, raising their expectations and giving children more chances to apply, reason mathematically and explain their thinking.

"Reading outcomes nationally are much lower this year reflecting a far higher level of challenge. Nevertheless, our pupils have also performed very well in reading compared to their peers nationally, " explained Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.

"Congratulations to all of our pupils on their individual results, reflecting their effort and hard work, " added Miss O'Dwyer, Year Leader.

School leaders and the Governing Body will analyse and evaluate results further when a full set of comparative information is released by the government in September.

Nationally, there are mixed views about the change in test arrangements. Read more:
