Climate change school strikes: open as usual

Over the weekend, a number of national newspapers reported that pupils in the UK are taking strike action by walking out of lessons about climate change this Friday.  Reports focus on secondary age pupils.

We are expecting to be open as usual without any pupil walk-outs on Friday.  Whilst I understand pupils’ interest in the protest, I also cannot condone missing a day of education - a view shared by the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), my professional association.  Therefore, if parents and pupils decide to protest, absence will be unauthorised.

However, our pupil Eco-committee, led by Mr Webb, will be discussing why some older students have decided to take action in this way.
