Findings from Health related Behaviour survey

At the start of October, Years 4 and 6 took part

Ealing’s Health Related Behaviour survey. This is a confidential survey that is used to gain children’s views on a range of health behaviour including:

Home and family                       Health

Healthy Eating                           Feelings

Bullying                                     Alcohol

Physical activity                         Smoking

Leisure time                              Growing up

The results of this survey were sent back to us to analyse and summarise key facts and decide our next steps.

Summary of findings from survey :

Context:

  • Pupils from years 4 and 6 completed the Ealing Health related behaviour survey in October.

Positives:

  • Healthy Eating- 90% of pupils responded that they had something to eat at home before lessons on the day of the survey, while 10% said they had something at school and 5% had something on the way to school. Only 1% of pupils responded that they had nothing to eat for breakfast on the day of the survey.

  • Safe guarding - 74% who have been told how to stay safe online AND always follow the advice they have been given.

  • Health- 74% of Year 6 pupils responded that they got at least 8 hours' sleep the night before the survey with 2% responding that they got 'less than 6 hours' sleep the night before the survey.

Areas for development:

  • Healthy Eating- just 28% of pupils responded that they ate at least five portions of fruit and vegetables on the day before the survey with 8% having vegetables or salad as part of their packed lunch.

  • Physical activity- just 33% of pupils reported that they did some physical activity every day for 7 days.

  • Emotional wellbeing- 33% of pupils responded that they were pushed/hit/kicked for no reason at least a 'few times' in the month before the survey; 47% said they were teased/made fun of. 48% of pupils responded that, in the last month, have at least 'sometimes' been called nasty names, threatened for no reason or ganged up on.

  • Dieting (Year 6 only)- 29% of Year 6 pupils said they would like to lose weight with 5% saying they would like to lose 'a lot' of weight.

Next Steps:

  • Year 4 and 6 to do a repeat of lesson on being healthy and nutrition, linking directly to importance of eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables. Year 6 to also talk about what dieting means and importance of having a healthy balanced diet.

  • Sharing reminders and ideas to parents about a balanced diet, including amounts of fruit and vegetables to eat.

  • PE lessons in Spring term to further promote importance of daily physical activity.

  • Use January Values assemblies and Values lessons to focus on how we treat each other and behaviour expectations (linking to Values of Respect and Responsibility).

  • To add an additional RSHE lesson to Spring Year 6 RSHE healthy relationships, that focusses on acceptable and unacceptable ways of treating each other.

Thank you
