Keeping your child safe online - Instagram

As part of our safer internet awareness programme, just before the half-term break, children in Years 1 - 6 took part in an assembly or workshop delivered by OpenView Education. open

Children in Years 1 and 2 learned how to be E-Safety Wizards and explored how to use the internet safely, Older children took part in assemblies on how to keep personal information safe when posting on the internet.  We know that even though social media platforms have age restrictions, that for many children interacting with social media  it is a part of everyday life. With this in mind, children in  Years 3,4 and 5 learned about making 'one good choice' - to stop, block, screenshot and report any worrying content.  Year 6 children took part in workshops to empowered them to make better online decisions.

How can you support your child to use social media safely? Focus on Instagram,

Instagram is one of the most used platforms among young people and adults. The platform can be excellent source of entertainment and information for people of all ages.

As I'm sure most of you know, the platform is focused on images and videos. Did you know there is also a private chat function? For many children and teenagers the chat function is the sole reason they use Instagram.

Privacy is optional on Instagram, and there is a wide spectrum of privacy options. To understand these options better the Southwest Grid for Learning has published a guide to help navigate through the many options. The guide answers questions such as:

  • Is my account private or public?
  • How to share with a select group of followers?
  • How do I block someone?
  • Do you know how to report content?
  • How do I hide comments and message requests?
  • How do I delete or report comments?
  • How do I delete my account?
