Queen Camilla opens new library

Her Majesty The Queen opened Fielding's new library on Tuesday 29 August after a 'Poetry Together' recital and tea party hosted at the school.

Fielding's library for year 3-6 pupils is located at the heart of the school, reflecting the importance of helping pupils develop a love of books and reading. The refurbished library is vibrant and modern in style. The bespoke design and installation is thanks to Incube Ltd - Fabulously Funky Furniture for schools.

Baroness Dame Floella Benjamin, a supporter of Poetry Together, signed copies of her books in our 'No Outsiders' collection.

During the visit, The Queen enjoyed recitals by Fielding pupils and their grandparents, along with national winners and supporters from the Poetry Together initiative. Pupils were presented certificates by The Queen. After the recital, pupils, parents and grandparents joined local care home residents to share a cup of tea and slice of cake. Her Majesty brought a cake baked at Buckingham Palace to the party, cutting the cake on stage with special guests, Alice and The Mad Hatter.

Pupils from Reception, year 2, year 3 and year 5 took part in the performance. Fielding's year 2 and year 3 pupils and their grandparents recited Mary Howitt's poem 'The Spider and The Fly' for the queen. Camilla said, "Brilliant, that was absolutely incredible" as she presented them with their certificate.

Poet Roger McGough tested the rhyming skills of the audience with a participation poem to the delight of all.

Poetry Together was launched in 2019 by broadcaster Gyles Brandreth in partnership with Dukes Education and National Poetry Day.
