Year 1 - Where the Wild Things Are

Exploring story settings

This week in Year One we have been studying the classic story of Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Pupils enjoyed role playing the story through drama. We are working towards writing a description of our own story setting, so we discussed ways to make our writing more exciting.  They were encouraged to think carefully about the story setting in the book. We looked at how the writer used descriptive language to set the scene. The pupils were introduced to the concept of similes and how they may be used to enhance a description. Every pupil chose something to describe from the story and they wrote a simile about it. “The trees were as green as guacamole” –Simon, 1S.
