  • This week's Reading Celebrations!

Thu 01 Dec 2022 Philippa Whaley

‘I think it’s the books that you read when you’re young that live with you forever.’ This is a well-known quote from JK Rowling. She is also known to have said, ‘The most important thing you can do is read as much as you can, like I did. It will give you an understanding of what makes good writing, and it will enlarge your vocabulary.’ Year 5 are currently enjoying listening to their teachers read her first book aloud in Story time, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.’ They listen with awe and wonder, make predictions, summarise what has already happened and learn and apply new vocabulary in their speech and writing. The possibilities are truly endless when you read.

Each week, it is a pleasure to meet all the pupils at Fielding who have received Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Reading certificates. These are awarded for reading books for pleasure from the recommended reading lists and completing reading response activities in their pink book. The options for these activities can be found in your child's reading record or on their year group noticeboard on the website. Once they are completed, teachers read through them and reward their pupils with certificates during the year group weekly reward assemblies. We look forward to celebrating further reading achievements next week!

All pupils who attend Fielding are expected to read for 20 minutes at home every day. This may be to a parent, other adult or independently, if able. Teachers will be checking pupils' reading records every day and signing them weekly to ensure that this is happening and will be following up with pupils and parents when it is not.

As well as signing their reading record every day and writing the name of the book and pages they've read, pupils and parents are encouraged to record new words they come across and discuss the meanings of these together. Please see the picture below for clear instructions on how to use the reading record daily.

  • How safe is your child online? Growing numbers of child abuse videos online

Thu 01 Dec 2022 Clare Haines

You may have heard in the news last week that over a 5-day period, the Internet Watch Foundation  (IWF) found 900 cases of children as young as 7 coerced into making the most severe sexual abuse videos and images.

These latest findings all involved young children being coerced into generating abuse material from their homes...often while their parents were unaware in the house.

We teach children to never changed or undressed in front of a camera. This London Grid for Learning (LGFL) video is an easy way to reinforce this message

More information on online safety can be found on our web page:

In preparation for Spring 2023 clubs launch please review your child's waiting list options.

If your child is currently on a waiting list for a specialist club but no longer requires a place next term please either remove their name from the list in MCAS or email clubs@fielding.ealing.sch.uk with your child's name, class and club that is no longer required.

If your child's name remains on the waiting list and a space is available, they will be pre-booked and charged before the launch evening.

This must be actioned by Sunday 4th December.

Please help us to keep this process as smooth as possible by tidying up your child's MCAS account and clearing all outstanding fees.

  • KS2 Boccia Festival

Thu 01 Dec 2022 Natasha Pasha

Today we entered two Boccia teams. For those not familiar with Boccia it is a game where there are 6 red, 6 blue and 1 white leather ball. The aim of the game is you need to get your ball as close to a white target ball as possible.

There were a total of 30 schools that entered this tournament across Ealing.

Our teams were in 4th and 5th place.

As a team, I am absolutely delighted the children showed the value of respect by shaking hands with their opponents at the end of every game. They showed resilience even if they were losing, they kept trying. They showed empathy towards teammates who found it difficult that we lost. At the end of the tournament, we reflected as a team and identified our strengths and what we would do differently next time.

    Well done!

A special thank you to …

    Liam M (3F), Grace T (3F), Alivia (3S), Beatrice (3H), Rebecca (3H), Araiya (3P), Sebastian (4S) , Prem (4S) Richard (6H), Gabriel (6H)
