  • Change of shoes for PE

    Thu 21 Oct 2021 D Thomas

As the field starts to get wetter and muddier we now recommend that children bring in a change of footwear for the PE lesson on the field. Ideally, this change of footwear would be a pair of studded boots however a different pair of trainers would be ok too. Please ensure that children do have 2 different pairs of footwear so that they are able to continue their day after PE in clean and dry trainers.

  • Can your child take part in a study about COVID?

Thu 21 Oct 2021 Peter Dunmall

The government is carrying out a study to try and find out how many children have had COVID-19 in the past. Nursery age children are not taking part.

Parents decide if they would like to help by letting their child take part.

There is one part to the study. The people doing the study will come to school to collect the information they need. They will visit classes and take a saliva swab from children's mouths. Children will rub a small sponge into their mouths for two minutes, like brushing their teeth. The researchers will then use this to see how many children have had coronavirus before.

Pupils do not have to take part if parents do not want them to. Parents can say no at any time.

Please check your email inbox for more information and a link to sign-up on-line.

The study is not organised or managed by Fielding. There is no need to tell us whether your child is or is not taking part.

  • Years 3 -6, Is your child ready for our first TTRS battle?

Wed 20 Oct 2021 Reena Patel

Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) has proven to be the most recent phenomenon of learning times tables at Fielding as it is fun and challenging for all of our pupils. Through its carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice in-school and at home, it ensures no child is left behind in practice and for those that are confident, over-practice is ensured to increase higher levels of automaticity.

To continue to encourage this high level of practice, we are launching our first 'Battle of the Bands' over the half-term break where all classes in Years 3 -6 will participate in order to win!

Since the start of term, pupils in years 3 -6  have been playing Times Tables Rock Stars  more frequently than ever before at home! Pupils are excited, enthusiastic, motivated and highly competitive to battle one another, play different modes and earn 'coins' to tweak their personalised rock star avatars. This in addition to the regular in-class practice has already shown a progression in pupils' recall and fluency of multiplication/division facts.

    Why is this important?

It is essential that pupils are fluent, confident and learn instant recall of times tables as without this, many future maths topics will elude pupils. Times tables are fundamental to many maths topics as mental maths facts and operations need to be able to be carried out quickly and with a degree of automaticity in order to free up pupils' working memory for newer, more challenging tasks at hand.

What is a Battle of the Bands?

A Battle of the Bands is a fun way to get groups of pupils competing against each other and a great way to sustain pupils' enthusiasm in practicing times tables on TTRS. This battle will be between all classes in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

    When will it begin/end?

The Fielding Battle of the Bands will being on Friday 22nd October 2021 from 4pm and will end on Sunday 31st October at 8pm.

    How to play:

Pupils can login via their personalised username and passwords. If they are unsure of this, they can check with their class teacher.

Click here to access the site.

    How to earn points:

Every correct answer in any game type is worth 1 point towards the class team. Pupils can play in Garage, Rock Slam, Soundcheck, etc and earn 1 point per correct answer.

Pupils should not confuse Battle points with coins! Coins are separate. They will still earn 10 coins per correct answer in the Garage, 5 per correct Soundcheck and 1 coin per correct answer everywhere else.

    Prizes

The winning class will be announced on Tuesday 2nd November and will win:

    • The TTRS Wrangle Trophy to keep until the end of term
    • An inflatable guitar to keep until the of term
    • TTRS Certificate
    • Recognition on our TTRS Leader Board

From the winning class, the pupil who scores the most points for their class team will win:

    • TTRS Keyring
    • TTRS Pencil
    • TTRS Certificate
    • Recognition on our TTRS Leader Board

TTRS promotes the "little and often" technique which is why pupils only need to play between 3-10 minutes a day as part of their daily practice and whilst doing this over the half-term they will be earning those points for their class band!

We look forward to see how this Battle of the Bands 'rocks' out and as the Maths Lead, I look forward to announcing the first ever winners on Tuesday 2nd November!

  • Fielding 10 Pin Bowling team win Silver medals

    Wed 20 Oct 2021 D Thomas

Fielding took 2 teams to Tenpin Bowling Centre in Acton on Wednesday to compete in the first ever Featherstone & Panathlon 10 Pin Bowling competition. We had 6 bowlers in each team who were each trying to bowl as many strikes and spares as they possibly could. After everyone had completed their game of bowling, scores were added up and each team had an average score calculated.

We were very happy to find out that one of our teams had finished between 4th and 12th (we weren't given a specific finishing position), although the score that they achieved suggests that the were probably 4th, 5th or 6th! We were then even happier to find out that our other team finished in 2nd place to win silver medals and a runners up trophy which is now proudly displayed in our trophy cabinet!

There is also individual success to share as 2 of our bowlers were awarded a Golden Medal for scoring the most strikes of the day as they both bowled 2 strikes each - well done Arthur and Rahand!

A huge well done to all of our bowlers today, you were all fantastic!

  • Volunteering in school and on school trips

Wed 20 Oct 2021 Clare Haines

As things are gradually returning to 'normal' we are welcoming back volunteers for in-school activities and on our school trips.

If you would like to volunteer please read our volunteer pack and apply on-line using one of these links:

Parents who volunteer more than once in a 4-week period are in 'regulated activity' this means you will need an enhanced clearance from the disclosure and barring service (DBS) to work in school. If you have previously had a DBS check through school, this will need to be repeated due to a 'break in service' because of the pandemic.

If you are volunteering for a 'one-off' event like cooking or a school trip, then a DBS check is not required. You do still need to complete our volunteer agreement forms in advance and will be supervised by a member of school staff.
