  • School improvement

    Mon 22 Sep 2014

Governors and school leaders set priorities.

National changes in education policy and evaluation of our school have determined key improvement priorities for this year, including:

    1. Creating a values-based education philosophy, helping children establish a clear moral and ethical compass.

    2. Deepening children’s understanding and improving assessment where the government has removed National Curriculum levels and introduced a new curriculum with higher expectations for each age group.

    3. Continuing to improve the quality of our teaching and raising outcomes for children focusing on:

    · maths and reading, with higher expectations and challenge especially for more able children

    · letters and sounds (phonics) in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 & Year 2

    · handwriting and spelling.

“Our drive to improve learning and teaching is based on best practice from around the world and underpinned by the work of leading academics, Tim Oates and John Hattie,” explained Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.  Find out more, web-search or click:

    · BBC Radio 4—The Educators, John Hattie, 30min interview

Governor members of our Pupils & Achievement committee are individually responsible for each priority and will monitor progress by meeting every half-term, receiving reports from school leaders and visiting the school to see and hear from children first-hand.

  • Soft Start

    Fri 05 Sep 2014

Drop off from 8.45am, starts Monday 8th September

From Monday, school doors will open at 8.45am with children coming straight into school as soon as they arrive.  Doors close at 9am, when the register is also taken and teaching begins.  On the rare occasions that any child arrives after 9am, they should report to the school office.  After hanging up coats and bags, children will undertake a range of independent learning activities such as reading, handwriting, spelling, times-tables and reviewing previous learning / marking, at the teacher’s discretion.

Our youngest children will continue to be dropped off at the classroom doors and be greeted by their teacher:

    · Reception, Years 1, 2 & 3—drop off at individual classroom doors.

For our older children, to help build independence and prepare for high school, drop-off will be at designated playground doors.  Children are expected to be responsible and trustworthy as they move through the building to their classroom as they arrive at school:

    · Year 4, dining hall entrance from the large middle playground

    · Year 5, double doors between Music Room and ICT Room

    · Year 6, entrance from Wyndham Road playground

An adult from each year group team will be available to take messages from parents at each entrance door.  All teachers will be in the playground after school for informal chats.

Parents are welcome to mingle in the playground before school after dropping children off until 9am.

“We’re looking forward to a calm and purposeful start to the school day, giving children the chance to arrive at school from 8.45am and start their learning,” explained Mrs. Lunnon Haines, Deputy Head.

  • Our Values - Friendship

    Thu 04 Sep 2014

This month we are focusing on understanding the importance of friendship.  Friendship involves:

    · caring for each other,

    · sharing ideas,

    · respecting each other,

    · having fun.

Values underpin our ethos.  We teach children about values through assemblies, lessons, by being active role models and recognising children who show the values.  Look out for our ‘Values Ambassadors’ weekly awards.  Please talk to children about our values at home too.
