  • Coronavirus, COVID-19

Fri 28 Feb 2020 Peter Dunmall

There is some anxiety and worry about coronavirus, schools closing and wanting to know our view.

We continue to monitor and act on advice to schools from the Department for Education and Public Health England. I want to avoid a disproportionate reaction to the worry about the spread of the virus.

    Key messages:

    • Prevent the spread of infection by pupils and staff by washing hands more often during the school day. Staff can use lesson time to do this with pupils if needed. Wash hands:
      • before leaving home
      • on arrival at school
      • after using the toilet
      • after breaks and sporting activities
      • before food preparation
      • before eating any food, including snacks
      • before leaving school
    • Prevent the spread of infection by pupils and staff by self-isolating if you have travelled to high risk countries / areas:
    • Tell us about any suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19
    • Trust us to follow the latest advice if there are confirmed or suspected cases.

This year  timings of the day and the events will be adapted to suit the change of venue. Pupils will continue to take part in athletics and  compete with other constellations within in PE lesson time.

Pupils should come to school as normal on their sports day and will then walk to Elthorne as a class with teachers and any parent volunteers that wish to support the children.  Confirmed details will follow in the Summer term.

  • MindUP and Values: Optimism

    Thu 27 Feb 2020 F Allen

With February coming to a close, classes continue to develop their understanding of the Core Value of Resilience and linked value of Optimism for Key Stage 2 pupils.

But what is the neuroscience behind optimistic thinking and can we really choose our attitude?

Optimism is a way of seeing life hopefully and having the expectation of success and wellbeing. We are not born optimistic or pessimistic. In fact, thinking optimistically is a skill we can all develop and the more we practise it, the better we become at it. This is because of neuroplasticity: the ability of our brain to change and develop.

When we think optimistically, the thinking and learning part of the brain (the pre-frontal cortex) focuses on being positive and hopeful, and our brain releases dopamine which is our feel-good neurotransmitter. This makes us feel relaxed, happy and also helps us to learn. Reminding children about the benefits of thinking optimistically, helps them to develop a positive and resilient attitude towards learning and life.

Pupils will continue to deepen their understanding of optimism through MindUP lessons. Please encourage your child to talk about the neuroplasticity of the brain and the benefits of thinking positively.

Optimism tips to try at home:

    1. Start your day by saying three things that you are grateful for, even if it is something small
    2. When you come across a challenge or obstacle, focus on the benefits. For example, if you’re stuck in traffic, at least you can to listen to your favourite music for longer
    3. If you make a mistake, focus on what you are going to do next time rather than  why you have failed

Please see our MindUP page and the Reading List for Key Stage 1 and Reading List for Key Stage 2 then go to lesson 11: Choosing Optimism.

  • Frogs, herons and kites

Thu 27 Feb 2020 Ellie Lock

Spring is here - and the wildlife is arriving at the school pond. During our Big School Birdwatch we spotted a red kite circling overhead and a heron perched on the fence. On Monday 6H discovered frogs and fat clouds of frogspawn in the pond. Our wildlife sanctuary is working!

Thank you to everyone who raised money for the PTFA and made it possible to have a wildlife garden, and thank you to our volunteers for taking such good care of the chickens over the holidays. You rock.

    More garden news here.
