  • Has your child achieved their bronze, silver, or gold baccalaureate yet?

Tue 28 Feb 2023 Clare Haines

Children in Years 4, 5 and 6 are working hard towards gaining the different levels of baccalaureate. Over the last two weeks we have awarded around 30 baccalaureates in our assemblies.

We have been very impressed with the range of activities within school and the community children have completed, and the effort put into the presentation of portfolios.

Mira in 5S shared her portfolio for her silver award with myself and Mr Dunmall today. We really enjoyed reading her comparison of a Christian Church and a Hindu Mandir. Well done Mira!

You can see a copy of Mira's work here:

  • There are 'No Outsiders' here

Tue 28 Feb 2023 Clare Haines

Last week we launched our No Outsiders programme in assembly time, using the book, 'Here We Are' by Oliver Jeffers. Children in Years 1 -6  worked in mixed-aged groups to find out more about each other and what makes each of us and our families different.  Following this, in class, children from Reception to Year 6 enjoyed listening to their first No Outsiders class book.

Children in Reception started with ‘The Family Book’ by Todd Parr. Children were inspired by the text to think about their own families and what makes them special:

My family loves different things. I like playing with my toys and Joshi likes drinking milk. Dad likes going to work and mummy likes dressing up as a clown!’

‘I have the same colour hair as my dad.’ Oscar

‘I look like my brother and my mum. Her hair is lighter than mine. My dog is a red lab and she has different colour hair than all of us.’ Hugo

My mummy and brother have the same skin as me, my daddy’s skin is darker.’ Dulcie

Year 3 read the book, 'The Truth About Old People'. They thought about the protected characteristic of age, and explored different stereotypes.

In Year 5 the pupils listened to the story of, 'How to Heal a Broken Wing' linked to our core value of empathy and people who need help.

Year 6 read the book 'The Islander', they considered the cause of racism and learned about the protected characteristic of race.

Next week in assembly we will be exploring disabilities and linking this to our core value of empathy. We will be using the book 'I Talk Like a River', and linking this to the story of professional footballer, Watford's Ken Sema, who has a stammer.

Take a look at some of the children's work, linked below.

  • Dogs

Mon 27 Feb 2023 Peter Dunmall

Parents have mixed views about dogs on the school site. Currently, dogs may be brought on to the school site under close control which means being carried in the arms of their owner. We are reviewing this arrangement and may ban dogs from the school site.

Dog owners tell us that they enjoy the flexibility of bringing their dog to school at drop-off and/or collection time. Most carry their dog in their arms. Some tie dogs up at our entrance gates. However, others have started to walk dogs, on a lead, telling site staff, 'that's what they see other dog owners doing.'

Other parents say that dogs should not be allowed on the school site. They feel that dogs and children do not mix well at this busy time of day.

Nationally, there was the harrowing case of Alice Stones, who was attacked and killed by an out of control dog in her back garden. For many, dogs are our best friends. But, sometimes they get out of control and outcome can be devastating. Especially to young children who lack the strength that allows adults to protect themselves.

    Our risk is not knowing,

    • how well any dog is cared for and trained by its owner,
    • and for children exploring the world, not understanding any signs of a poorly trained, supervised or agitated dog.

We put pupils first. Therefore, all dogs to be carried at drop-off and collection times, while we review arrangements which could result in no dogs on site at these times.

  • 7-0 Victory for Year 5 & 6 Girls Performance team in Ealing Cup

Fri 24 Feb 2023 Natasha Pasha

Today the Fielding Girls’ team had Mia (6S) from the development team play his debut in the performance team.

Yesterday the girls had played in the Ealing football league and were all given individual feedback on what they could do to improve their performance. It was clear as soon as the game started that they applied this to their game.

The defence was tight and the girls at the back Martha (6H), Emma (6H), and Anya (6F) all communicated well and made some great interceptions. The girls in attack decided they were going to press and score an early goal to build momentum. The first goal was scored by Flo G (5S) which was crossed into her. Immediately after, Evie (6S) then scored the goal by hitting a deflection from the defenders. Then Avaani (6F) came on and scored a great goal from a cross. Emma (6F) started driving the ball towards the goal and managed to score a beautiful goal from the halfway line. The final goal for the first half was scored by Avaani. At half-time, the score was 5-0.

Going into the second half we wanted to secure the win, so we experimented with different combinations of attacking players. Lyla (6H), and Ruth (6P) made some great one-two passes and set up Flo H (6H) to score a cheeky goal against the goalkeeper. Mia (6S) had a few shots at goal which were blocked by the keeper but Emma (6F) got an interception and turned them into a goal. Emma (6F) was asked to take a penalty as a handball was given, she hit the ball low and hard and scored once again. This resulted in Emma (6F) now scoring a hat trick.

It was great to see the girls play well as a cohesive unit and communicate well in attack. Well done to Lana (6F) who maintained a clean sheet.

    Goals scored by…

    • Emma (6F) Hatrick one of which was a penalty x 3
    • Flo G (5S) x 1
    • Avaani (6F) x 2
    • Evie (6S) x1

    Fielding won 7 - 0

    Special Thanks to ...

  • 5 -0 Victory for Year 5 & 6 Boys Performance Football team in PEAL Shield

Fri 24 Feb 2023 Natasha Pasha

Today the Fielding Boys team had Oscar (5P) from the development team play his debut in the performance team.

Unfortunately, our usual defender Sev (5S) went home sick so last-minute changes had to be made to the starting line and formations needed to be adapted. We started with 3-1-2.

Immediately, after the whistle was blown the boys were straight on the attack and within minutes Tem (5F) managed to weave past Mount Carmel's defence and score an early goal. This built confidence within the team and gave them the drive to continue to press forwards.  Then Gioele (6F) crossed a ball into Ahmed (5F) who struck the ball and deflected it off Mount Carmel defenders. Ahmed (5F) then assisted Ishaaq (6F) scoring a beautiful goal from the halfway line. At half-time, the score was 3-0.

The defence was tight and the boys at the back Oscar (5P), Gioele (6F), and Ishaaq (6F) all communicated well and made some great interceptions to ensure it was a goalless first half.

Going into the second half we wanted to secure the win, so we experimented with different combinations of attacking players. Aiden (6F) was put in midfield and Theo (6S) and Noah (6F) were upfront this combination proved to work as Noah (6F) was able to score a goal.  Then suddenly from the goal half Gioele (6F) attempted to strike a long ball which resulted in a stunning goal. It was something out of a premier league game.  Reuben (6S), Ahmed (6F) and Theo (6S) all assisted in adding pressure to the attack which intimated our opponents.

It was great to see the boys play well as a cohesive unit and communicate well in attack. Well done to Jordi (6S) who maintained a clean sheet.

    Goals scored by…

    • Tem (5F) x 1
    • Gioele (6F) x 1
    • Ahmed (5F) x 1
    • Ishaaq (6F) x 1
    • Noah (6F) x 1

    Fielding won 5 - 0

    Special Thanks to ...

    Reuben (6S), Aiden (6F), Ahmed (5S), Theo (6S), Gioele (6F), Ethan (6S), Tem (5F), Ishaaq (6F), Jordi (6S), Oscar (5P)

  • Met Police warning and advice about robberies

    Fri 24 Feb 2023

Following a series of robberies, the Met Police have asked schools to share this information with the school community.

I am writing to make you aware of a recent increase in robberies against school aged children in Ealing Broadway over the past few weeks.

I would like to remind you of some crime prevention advice that can help keep them safe.

    • Be aware of your surroundings when out and avoid using your mobile phone in public or having valuables on display.
    • Smart phones in particular are attractive to thieves – a more basic mobile phone will enable you to stay in touch but be less of a target. Register your mobile at immobilise.com to help police recover it if it’s ever stolen.
    • Airpods or headphones can make you more vulnerable as you are less aware of your surroundings.
    • Consider turning on the GPS on your phone when out and about, this can also be helpful to officers when attempting to locate stolen phones.
    • Having conversations about the safest route home, avoiding shortcuts, is a good idea.
    • Don’t confront a thief – it’s not worth risking your own safety for possessions that can be replaced.

Please be assured we have extra police patrols in the area and we are working together with partner agencies to identify and arrest offenders involved.

In an emergency situation please contact 999 to ensure you get a fast response If you would like to report any incidents to police this can be done on 101 or reported online at www.met.police.uk. Information can be passed via the Safer Schools Team anonymously or by using www.Crimestoppers-UK.org or the youth version www.Fearless.org. Fearless is a youth service that is independent of Crimestoppers. It gives you the opportunity to pass on information about crime 100% anonymously and you will not need to speak to police or go to court.

  • Readathon, Fielding Book Day and this week's Reading Celebrations

Fri 24 Feb 2023 Philippa Whaley

'Access to books and the encouragement of the habit of reading: these two things are the first and most necessary steps in education and librarians, teachers and parents all over the country know it. It is our children's right and it is also our best hope and their best hope for the future.' Michael Morpurgo.

    Fielding Book Day

Fielding will be celebrating World Book Day on Friday 3rd March (the National day is Thursday 2 March).

To mark the occasion, children (and adults) will choose their favourite book character or a favourite book and bring in or wear 3 clues to what the book is for their class to guess. For example, this could include a mask or props, which of course may be home-made.

In addition to this, all children in the school will take part in buddy reading, sharing books that they love with another child or children in another year group. This is back by popular demand from the children as it has been such a success in previous years.

Nursery will buddy read with Year 5.

Reception will buddy read with Year 4.

Year 1 will buddy read with Year 3.

Year 2 will buddy read with Year 6.

Michael Morpurgo online event, KS1 and KS2

Children will also be taking part in an online 45 minute event with Michael Morpurgo. In this Q&A session, Michael will be talking to one of the Read for Good storytellers about his inspiration for War Horse as well as reading an extract from the book. First published in 1982, War Horse was inspired by accounts told to Michael by First World War veterans and by witnessing first-hand the connection between animals and a young boy at his ‘Farms for City Children’. War Horse follows Joey the horse from the fields of Devon to the deadly chaos of trenches during the First World War, a powerful story of friendship and humanity on both sides of the war.

    Readathon (27.2.23 - 5.3.23)

During the week of World Book Day 2023 (Monday 27.2.23- Monday 5.3.23), pupils will also be taking part in Readathon. Since its first Readathon in 2000, Fielding has raised a grand total of £5381. This has led to many books being donated to much-needed schools and hospitals. During the week after half term (week commencing  20th February), your child will receive a sponsor card, book mark and details on how to take part and start raising money. Please see the film below for further information.

Find out more about Readathon here.

    Reading Celebrations

A huge congratulations once again to the many pupils across the school who have been reading books for pleasure from the recommended reading lists and completing reading response activities in their pink book to achieve bronze, silver, gold and even platinum certificates! The options for these activities can be found in your child's reading record or on their year group noticeboard on the website. We look forward to celebrating further reading achievements next week!

All pupils who attend Fielding are expected to read for 20 minutes at home every day. This may be to a parent, other adult or independently, if able. Teachers check pupils' reading records every day and sign them weekly to ensure that this is happening and will be following up with pupils and parents when it is not. As well as signing their reading record every day and writing the name of the book and pages they've read, pupils and parents are encouraged to record new words they come across and discuss the meanings of these together.

    Book Fair

With the support of our Senior Librarians, we are once again welcoming and running the Travelling Books book fair after half-term. It will be situated in the KS1 library from Tuesday 7th March- Monday 13th March and will be open for business between 8:15am and 8:45am in the mornings and 3:30-4pm each afternoon. We look forward to seeing you there!

  • Parent Governor Ballot

Fri 24 Feb 2023 Peter Dunmall

Good news, three parents have put themselves forward to stand for the Parent Governor vacancy, this means a ballot:

    • Melanie Cotton, who has a child in Year 1

    • Sulekha Joyce, who has a child in Year 2

    • Polly Wilson, who has children in Year 1 and Year 3

Personal statements & ballot papers will be sent out on Friday 3rd March 2023. There is a 14-day window for ballot papers and parent declaration forms to be returned to the school, deadline Friday 17th March 2023 at 3.30pm. Any votes received after this date will not be accepted.

There will be three secure ballot boxes for you to return your forms safely

    • Boxes are outside the Main Hall from Wyndham Road entrance, outside Year 1 block and outside Year 6 entrances
    • These boxes are Fielding blue and will have a sign clearly stating that they are ballot boxes.

    • You can also return these forms by Royal Mail but not by pupil post.

Ealing Council has strict rules about parent governor elections. We would prefer to complete all of this electronically but have been told that we cannot.

    The double envelope system
Each parent will be provided with a ballot paper and a parent declaration form. When recording your vote on the ballot paper, please clearly mark which candidate you wish to vote for (please do not mark this paper in any way which may identify you). When you have completed the ballot paper this must be placed in the smaller envelope provided and sealed. You must also complete the declaration form which goes in the large envelope provided along with the smaller sealed envelope which will contain your ballot paper.

For parents living at the same address, each parent should put their ballot paper in separate small envelopes and then put both declarations and the two sealed small envelopes in the larger envelope provided.

Ballot papers will be sent home by pupil post on Friday 3rd March 2023. If you do not receive these forms, you will need to come into the school office and complete a parent verification form. This form states that you have either not received the original papers or that these maybe lost. Completed forms cannot be sent electronically.

You can return these forms to the designated ballot boxes as explained above or by Royal Mail.
Electronic documents will not be accepted.
All votes are kept in a secure area until the count.

    The count

The count for the election will take place on Monday 20th March 2023 at 11.30 am.  Notification of the successful candidate will be made known via Latest News on Monday 20th March 2023.

  • Garden update

Thu 23 Feb 2023 Elise Laird

There have been several changes in the garden in the last few weeks.

    • Following the laying of the new rubber flooring in the chicken area, the chickens now have a new automatic chicken door with a light sensor that locks every night when it gets dark and opens in the morning when it is light. As the days get longer the chickens will appreciate not having to go to bed before the school closes each day. It also means the kind volunteers at the weekend and holidays don't have to come and let the chickens out first thing in the morning. Thank you to the PTFA who helped to fund the purchase.
    • It is not the right time of year for planting in the garden so many of the older year groups have been working very hard in gardening lessons continuing to get the garden in optimal shape for new growth in the spring. Year 6 have been working together really well and fruit bushes have been pruned, a rhubarb plant moved to a better location, planters cleared for new spring/summer seeds, strawberry plants thinned, the pond cleared of lots of autumn fallen leaves and the polytunnel cleared of many hard-to-dig-up weeds. A beautiful bush that was unfortunately damaging the polytunnel was also very quickly cleared by some of the students in 6F!
    • Year 2 also made many apple & seed bird feeders that encouraged lots of small birds back into the garden. Between all the great bird feeders and the warmer, sunny period that encouraged the birds back we have seen many more little birds in the garden and around the school than have been seen in months.

Volunteers (and holiday club) are continuing to do an excellent job of caring for the chickens during holidays and weekends. A particular thank you for Jenny Nicholas (mum of Ted, 3P) who very kindly offered to do some garden work the weekend her family were feeding the chickens. She did some amazing work in the garden including tidying up some of the beds and pruning the raspberry bushes (and her work was the 'end product' example to inspire some of year 6 this week!).

Thank you also to Chilli Favuzza, one of our TAs, for her very welcome donation of new gardening gloves for the pupils.
