  • 900 Primary children place poppies in school field

    Fri 24 Oct 2014

Children Commemorate the Centenary of WW1

On Thursday 6th November, children and staff at Fielding Primary School, in Northfields, will be remembering the men and women of the First World War, as part of the centenary events that are taking place across the country, and inspired by the Tower of London’s Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red which will see 888,246 ceramic poppies planted in the Tower's moat, each poppy representing a British military fatality during the war.

The children have created their very own poppies, which will be planted into the school field, as a mark of respect.

Marking the event, Clair Biedul, Assistant Head, remarked, “this ceremony brings together our school community, and the culmination of the work we have been doing in Black History Month, recognising the sacrifices everybody made regardless of beliefs, nationality or upbringing. It is hugely important that the children learn about the history that shaped their experiences, and this is an opportunity for us to remember.”

Following on from the planting ceremony, the youngest and eldest child in the school will join Year 6 children on the field to lay a wreath.  At the end of the school day, donations to the British Legion will be accepted, with this money being presented to them at a later date, and children will be able to bring their poppies home.

Headteacher, Peter Dunmall, said: “An occasion like this highlights the Values-based ethos of our school implicitly and explicitly, and it is fitting that the value of last month was respect.”

Gates to the school were opened from 3-4pm for viewing by parents and our local community.
