  • Ealing Council surpasses SEND provision target

Fri 28 Apr 2023 Peter Dunmall

Fielding's ARP helps Ealing Council beat it's target for high quality provision for pupils with special education needs (SEND). To mark the occasion, Ealing Council leader, Peter Mason and cabinet member for a fairer start, Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, visited our the new, state of the art provision this week.

Our new Additional Resource Provision (ARP) facilities provide 27 new primary school places for children from reception to year 6, who have speech, language and communication difficulties, including autism and associated learning difficulties.

This project is part of the council’s plan to deliver 70 places in this council term, between 2022 and 2026. A total of 50 new specialist places were created in 2022/23, which surpasses the council’s commitment to reach 40 new places for children with specialist needs in the year.

The provision at Fielding is run by specialist teacher, Alison Trott, who said: “The ARP will allow for classes of up to nine pupils, and the opportunity to learn alongside pupils in the main school. The pupils will gradually work towards being independent and spend more time in, and mix with the main school.

“The ARP is housed in a new, single-story building with three classrooms and extra support rooms, with outdoor play area and sensory garden on the site.”

Councillor Peter Mason said: “This fantastic project at Fielding is part of our commitment in the Council Plan to ensure that all Ealing children have access to the best schools in their local communities, regardless of their backgrounds and whether they have special educational needs or disabilities. As a council, we will continue to create schools that are greener and more modern and that set a standard of excellence for all London to follow.

“This is an important step forward for Ealing, as we surpass our target of 40 SEND spaces in the council plan, delivering 50 spaces, providing the vital support children need to achieve their potential and lead healthy, fulfilling lives.”

Ealing Council has ARP facilities for children with speech, language and communication difficulties including autism in seven primary schools (Coston, Drayton Green, Havelock, West Acton, Beaconsfield, Willow Tree, Selborne), four high schools (William Perkin, Twyford, Greenford, Elthorne), and is planning two more to meet secondary school needs in Northolt and Villiers.

Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal said: “The new building allows for children to receive specialist teaching, learning in small groups, remaining integral and visible members of an inclusive school community. This is in line with our commitment to a fairer start, making sure that our children’s needs are met and that our young people with special educational needs and disabilities are supported not only to survive at school, but to thrive.”

More information about how the council supports children with special educational needs and disabilities, and their families, can be found online:

  • PTFA needs volunteers for Uniform Shop and Summer Fair

    Thu 27 Apr 2023 PTFA

We are very excited to be opening the Second Hand Uniform Shop this week - a project that resulted from a crowdfunding exercise in 2022. Thank you to those that have donated uniforms already.  However, whilst the core PTFA volunteers have been busy behind the scenes getting this project up and running, we need volunteers from the wider school community to help us run the shop.  The plan is to open the shop once a month (either a Friday afternoon (3.30 - 4.15pm or a Saturday morning). If you can spare 60-90 mins to help run the Uniform Shop please email the PTFA on fieldingPTFA@gmail.com

The other area where the PTFA need help is for the Summer Fair which has been confirmed as Saturday 1 July (12pm - 4pm).  We desperately need some parents to join the fair organising team. We'll be a group of about 10 people who look at which stalls to run, liaise with class reps on stall options and will involve a couple of meetings to plan layouts, themes, promotion amongst other bits.  Don't worry if you have no experience, there is a team happy to mentor you! Please email us at fieldingPTFA@gmail.com if you would like to join the team.

  • End of year reports updated format

Tue 25 Apr 2023 Clare Haines

Following on from my news article in March about end of year assessments and reporting, I'd like to share with you the updated format for annual reports.

    Why the change?

We have listened to parents views on end of year reports and parent consultations. This year we are moving away from computer generated banks of report statements and the time this takes to complete to a much shorter report, covering just the statutory requirements for reporting to parents. This means teachers will have the time to meet with parents face to face at an end of year parent at a parent teacher consultation meeting.

    What will the reports include?

    • Attendance: percentage at school and percentage unauthorised absence.
    • An individual comment from the teacher about your child. This will be around 3 -5 sentences, personalised about your child and their year at school.
    • A comment on what the children in the year group have learned this year.

How will assessment be reported on?

    • If your child is in a year group where there are national tests (Year 1 - phonics check, Year 2 - SATs, Year 4 multiplication check, Year 6 SATS) - outcomes of these tests will be included on the report.
    • For other year groups for reading and mathematics - we will report on your child's end of year NFER tests and whether your child is working 'below', 'at', 'above' expectations for their age-group.
    • In all year groups teachers will make a judgement on writing and whether your child is working 'below', 'at' or 'above'
    • Other curriculum subjects: teachers will make a judgment on whether your child is working 'below' or 'at' expectations for their age group. The majority of pupils will be working 'at' as most pupils move their the curriculum content at the same time. This is not comparable to previous years reporting as we are reporting in a different way.
    • In Nursery teachers will assess whether pupils are working 'below' or 'at' the expectations for their age in each of the 7 areas for learning.
    • In Reception, teachers will report against the 17 'Early Learning Goals'.

    Next Steps

    • Teachers will include up to 3 next steps for your child to focus on in the next school year.

    More information

Please see example images below to see what the reports will look like:

  • Clerk to Governing Board wanted

Mon 24 Apr 2023 Peter Dunmall

Could you be our new Clerk to the Governing Board?

The Clerk is responsible for organising and supporting meetings of the Governing Board and Committees, and for advising the Board on governance, constitutional and procedural matters.

The Governing Board is inviting expressions of interest from those willing to develop expertise in school governance and with the skills and experience to provide a high quality board and committee secretariat service. Direct experience of school governance is not necessary, and the school will meet the reasonable costs of achieving an appropriate Level 3 qualification in school governance.

The Clerk is not a school employee but an independent contractor. Experienced clerks are in high demand and the appointee may be able to develop a portfolio of clerking appointments in due course.

  • Year 6 Hybrid Archery Competition

Thu 20 Apr 2023 Natasha Pasha

Archery is a new sport for the children at Fielding.

The Featherstone Sports Partnership delivered Archery training so that the children understood how to hold a bow and arrow to prepare for our competition. This allowed the children to learn and develop new skills.

This competition was hybrid which meant other schools in Ealing have also completed this event in their own school. The organisers collated all our results and we scored 301 points.

Currently, as it stands we are in 2nd place but this could change as not all schools have completed their Archery competition yet.

    Special thanks to ...

    Sam 6S, Jessica 6F, Ben A 6S, Alyona 6H, Nisa 6F, Arthur C 6S, Thaer 6F, Charlotte (Lottie) 6S, Eva 6P, Olivia 6S, Henri 6P, Oneek 6P

  • New Texts for Whole Class Reading in April, Years 2-6

Thu 20 Apr 2023 Philippa Whaley

Pupils in Year 2 are now joining those in Years 3-6 to be taught whole class reading in a similar format to English and maths lessons. Lessons are engaging and challenging with the inclusion of explicit pre-teaching of vocabulary and reading skills such as prediction and inference. There are opportunities for pupils to practise each skill before applying it directly in the context of the class text.

As previously stated, this approach to the teaching of reading works best if each child has their own personal copy of the book. We have found that children take more care of their own book, are more motivated to learn and it build up their own personal library.

In preparation for Summer term, we would like you to purchase a copy of the new class book. Please see details below of which book your child's year group will be studying:

If your child has a pupil premium passport we will provide your child with a copy of the class text free of charge. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you do not receive a grant but will be unable to provide the book due to financial reasons.

The shop is located in Reception’s playground, between the hill and the sandpit. The shop will take both cash and card payments.

This term the shop will be opening:

The PTFA is delighted to be able to offer improved access to second-hand uniform. There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to get this up and running and the success of the shop is down to the amazing volunteers.
